Review - Coraline: The Threepenny Children's Musical?

I suppose if Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill ever took a crack at writing theatre for young Weimar audiences, their effort might have had a strong likeness to Stephin Merritt and David Greenspan's creepily enchanting fantasy, Coraline, receiving a production from MCC that's far too interesting for viewers to be overly concerned with the occasional bumps.

Up-and-coming Philadelphia company, Nice People Theatre Company (NPTC), is remounting its first musical during the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe. This group-therapy-session comedy, Have A Nice Life by Conor Mitchell and Matthew Hurt, made its Philadelphia premiere in March, 2008 and due to popular demand, NPTC revived the show for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in September, 2008. The show runs August 7-16th at George Square Theatre 2, George Square/Buccleuch Place, Edinburgh, EH8 9LH (venue 37).

Nick Gaswirth ('Harpo Marx' in last season's Musicals in Mufti Minnie's Boys) will replace Bobby Steggert in the role of Brom Broeck in this weekend's concert presentation of KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY by the York Theatre Company. Mr. Steggert had to leave unexpectedly due to a family emergency. Also, Ric Stoneback (1776, Paper Mill) has replaced John O'Creagh.

Theatre Project Producing Director Anne Cantler Fulwiler has just announced the season line up for the Baltimore institution's new subscription series. The season will include the return of three popular past Theatre Project performers, Sara Felder of Philadelphia (June Bride), Al Letson of Florida (Essential Personnel, Griot, Summer in Sanctuary) and Vermont's Sandglass Theatre (Richard 3.5: Light Ruminations on Murder), and collaborations with three Maryland companies, Performance Workshop Theater, Quest: Arts for Everyone (with White Box Theater), and VT Dance.
