When looking for memorable images from America in the late 50's/early 60's, you are bound to find some old standards. Mom in the kitchen baking, Dad returning home from a long day at the office, children playing with their Slinky/Mr. Potato Head while drinking Tang, or the iconic footage of man walking on the moon for the first time. These images immediately place you firmly in an era where tradition crashed headlong into a world of new sights and sounds. And it is these images that brilliantly set the stage (and the mood) during the overture for Goodspeed Musicals' new production of the classic Adams/Strouse/Stewart musical, BYE BYE BIRDIE; and they signal the nostalgic, yet amazingly fresh romp the audience will experience for the next two hours.
Everyone will love this fun-filled musical, running now through September 4 at The Goodspeed in East Haddam, Conn. The Official Press Opening will be tonight, July 13, 2016. BroadwayWorld has a first look at the cast in action below!
The exuberant cast of BYE BYE BIRDIE will 'spread sunshine all over the place' in this summertime sensation directed by Jenn Thompson. Ms. Thompson's new take on this youthful classic includes two new songs, 'BYE BYE BIRDIE' from the 1963 film and 'A Mother Doesn't Matter Anymore' from the 1995 television presentation along with crisp new dance arrangements by accomplished composer of Broadway, film and television David Krane. Check out a sneak peek below!
Hosted by famously deadpan Julie Halston (You Can't Take It With You), the melange of actors presented in Monday night's comedy show at Feinstein's/54 Below drove home the fact that humor is simply not universal. Additionally, lack of continuity made it seem as if artists chose material no one reviewed.
Broadway's 40 theatres aren't the only places to catch performances from your favorite stars! Well after Broadway orchestras begin their overtures, ensemble members take their dance breaks, and performers belt out their eleven o'clock numbers, the party continues at various cabaret venues throughout New York City. Below, BroadwayWorld brings you some cabaret highlights for this week as picked by our theatre editors, including: The Nutty Professor Reunion Concert; Comedy Tonight: Broadway's Funniest Clowns; 54 Sings ABBA; Claybourne Elder at 54 Below; Hold On The Musical in Concert.
Next week, FEINSTEIN'S/54 BELOW, Broadway's Supper Club, presents some of the brightest stars from Broadway, cabaret, jazz and beyond. Scroll down for details!
Kevin Chamberlin, and Brad Oscar will be joining host Julie Halston on their night off from DISASTER! and SOMETHING ROTTEN! when Feinstein's/54 Below, Broadway's Supper Club, presents COMEDY TONIGHT: BROADWAY'S FUNNIEST CLOWNS!
I don't think many theater nerds need to argue the virtues of Stephen Schwartz's hit show "Wicked" currently playing at the Paramount Theatre. It's one of those shows that's widely and verbally loved by aficionados and general theatergoers alike. So when the tour comes through town it's bound to have the rich and powerful voices needed to blast those wonderful songs into the rafters. And this tour is no exception. But while this tour also boasts two wonderful leads who also manage some brilliant and layered storytelling in their characters, some of the supporting players felt lacking and flat in that aspect making this go around with the show not as awe-inspiring as past viewings.
For some reason, people have brought a great many little girls to see WICKED. It didn't seem to me a particularly child-friendly novel, but since the musical stage production shares about as much with Gregory Maguire's novel as Disney's Little Mermaid did with the story written by Hans Christian Andersen, that's probably fine.
Go backstage at the Adrienne Arsht Center's Ziff Ballet Opera House and see it transform into OZ for WICKED's return to Miami. WICKED will play at the Arsht Center from March 11-March 29, after a record-breaking run at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. Watch as the Munchkinland Tour takes over Miami and gives the Arsht Center an Ozian makeover.
The company of the Munchkinland tour of Wicked just welcomed Alyssa Fox as Elphaba and Liana Hunt as Nessarose in Greenville, SC. Fox and Hunt join a cast that includes Carrie St. Louis as Glinda, Kristine Zbornik as Madame Morrible and John Davidson as The Wizard.
The company of the Munchkinland tour of Wicked welcomes Alyssa Fox as Elphaba and Liana Hunt as Nessarose beginning tonight, January 28 in Greenville, SC.
Based on the Gregory Maguire novel titled Wicked: The Life & Times of The Wicked Witch of the West, this musical tells the story of The Wizard of Oz from the witches' perspective long before Dorothy dropped in. Wicked tells the story of two unlikely friends, Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda the Good, who struggle through opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, reactions to the Wizard's corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba's public fall from grace.
