BWW Review: Mean Girls, Primary Colors and Grand Guignol: HEATHERS at Red Branch

It is a safe bet that at every institution of secondary education with female students, there are Mean Girls. It is also a safe bet that there isn't a reader who needs the term defined, because there probably isn't a reader who hasn't experienced Mean Girls - or been one of them. And one trait we know the Mean Girls all share is they make people want to kill them.

Presented by the alumni of the Downtown Performing Arts Center of Lambertville, N.J., Heathers the Musical is for mature audiences.

REEFER MADNESS has Invaded the Conejo Valley

Reefer Madness, being staged by Conejo Players Theatre now through July 31, is inspired by the original 1936 film of the same name. This raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a hysterical downward spiral filled with evil jazz music, sex, and violence.

Photo Flash: First Look at the Cast of Castaside Productions' HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL

Based on the classic 1989 film and with a 2014 Drama Desk Nominated score by Laurence O'Keefe (Legally Blonde, Bat Boy) and Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness!), the Maine Premiere of HEATHERS the Musical centers around the microcosm of Westerberg High. The Heathers--the hottest and cruelest girls in all of Ohio--rule the school with an iron, well-manicured fist. But when misfit Veronica Sawyer upgrades to their status and then rejects their regime for a new boyfriend, the dark and sexy J.D. has plans to put the Heathers in their place. Check out a first look at the production below!

BWW Review: HEATHERS at Sydney Opera House

Hairspray. The Craft. Jawbreaker. Mean Girls. Can't Hardly Wait. Buffy. We would have none of these without Heathers. The flop-turned-cult-phenomenon film starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater in 1988 was a black comedy that took on every young-adult issue and shot it in the face. It's perfect fodder for a musical unlike any you've ever witnessed before, rightfully making its return to Sydney after touring the nation, to shock and shine at the Sydney Opera House. We've had a few cast changes since the Australian premiere at Hayes Theatre - don't worry they're all still alive, most of them just bailed to become Queens of a new musical - and the latest cast have really sensationalised the sass, camped it up like Christmas and made the vocals so very! If you missed it last time, it's a must-see moxie-fest. If you did catch it last time, then you definitely have to get back and see how it takes on the big stage with new choreography, design and drama!
