Earlier today, the cast of MATILDA THE MUSICAL got the chance to speak live with an astronaut on the International Space Station via satellite hook-up provided by NASA. During the event, Astronaut Tom Marshburn (brother-in-law of cast member John Sanders) got to chat with some of the kids and adults from the Tony nominated show. A year ago, Alex FInke was a college girl at the University of Michigan. While many of her contemporaries are likely still looking for a job or working their way up from the lower rungs of the corporate ladder, Finke is sailing through a career on the fast track, and she feels incredibly fortunate to be there. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, written by Christopher Durang, today won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award (NYDCC) for Best Play of the 2012-2013 season. Matilda received the award for Best Musical. The selections were made at the 78th annual voting meeting of the organization today at the offices of Time Out New York in Manhattan.

I woke up early to watch the Tony nominations. The categories & nominees were announced so fast I could barely register the names, much less process a reaction or live tweet my thoughts! Now that I've had a couple of days to consider the list, here are my very preliminary thoughts about each of the main categories. (Part 1 of 2!)
