Ashley Brown, Broadway's original MARY POPPINS, returned to the company yesterday, March 8, at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Brown assumes the title role through Sunday, July 17 (Laura Michelle Kelly, currently playing the role, will take a brief hiatus for a film project, returning to the show on Tuesday, July 19). Brown reunites with her original Broadway ‘Bert,' co-star Gavin Lee, having last performed with him when they launched and headlined the MARY POPPINS North American tour. The second opera in The Atlanta Opera's 2010-2011 season is George Gershwin's American classic Porgy and Bess. Set in Charleston, Porgy and Bess depicts the people of Catfish Row who are yearning for a better life and great love, and features some of the most popular tunes in opera including the lullaby, "Summertime."

Broadway leading lady Kelli O'Hara and opera star Nathan Gunn will perform selections from Show Boat; Carousel; Kiss Me, Kate; Very Warm for May; Love Life; One Touch of Venus; Street Scene; On the Town; Candide; and West Side Story with the New York Philharmonic, in Classic Broadway, conducted by Tony Award winner Ted Sperling, Monday, March 21, 2011, at 7:30 p.m. The pair will perform solos and duets from hit shows by American songwriters Jerome Kern, Kurt Weill, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, and Leonard Bernstein, whose music was matched with words by such celebrated lyricists as Oscar Hammerstein, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and Stephen Sondheim. Now celebrating its Fifth Anniversary Season, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County proudly presents the return to the Adrienne Arsht Center of the famed Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, under the baton of renowned conductor Keith Lockhart, on March 19, 2011 at 8 p.m. in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall. The program will honor the marvelous Cole Porter in celebration of the 120th anniversary of his birth. Porter's saucy style will come to life with special guests Kelli O'Hara, who recently starred in the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of South Pacific, and Jason Danieley, who most recently starred on Broadway in the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Next to Normal. Highlights of the tribute, entitled You'll Get a Kick Out of Cole, include Porter's iconic songs: 'Night and Day,' 'I Get A Kick Out of You,' 'Begin the Beguine,' 'It's De-Lovely,' 'What Is This Thing Called Love?,' plus much more. Works by Berlin, Bernstein, Gershwin, and Rodgers will also be performed.

It's not unusual for music lovers to ponder what the Great American Opera is. A good portion will argue persuasively in favor of Stephen Sondheim's SWEENEY TODD. Others will present strong reasons for George Gershwin's PORGY AND BESS. It's quite possible that THE GHOSTS OF VERSAILLES by John Corigliano has its coterie of supporters, too.

The Tony Award nominee Ann Hampton Callaway made her Royal Room debut in January 2002 and is returning for her sixth engagement at The Colony. One of the finest singer/songwriters of our time, the statuesque performer dazzles music lovers as a singer, pianist, composer, lyricist, arranger, and quick-witted actress. Her talents have made her equally at home in jazz and pop as well as on stage, in the recording studio, on TV and in film. She is best known for starring in the hit Broadway musical Swing! and for writing and singing the theme to the internationally successful TV series, The Nanny.

The Metropolitan Opera's first world premiere, which took place exactly 100 years ago, was based on an unlikely source: a spaghetti western called The Girl of the Golden West that composer Giacomo Puccini happened to see in New York in 1907.

World-famous conductor Keith Lockhart comes to Middlebury on January 7 to talk about opera, Puccini, and Puccini's little-known work, La Fanciulla del West.
