World-famous conductor Keith Lockhart comes to Middlebury on January 7 to talk about opera, Puccini, and Puccini's little-known work, La Fanciulla del West. The popular conductor of the Boston Pops will intersperse his comments with excerpts from the opera and will take questions from the audience.

After the talk there's a chance to meet the conductor at a special reception in the theater's Jackson Gallery.

The event will benefit the Foundation for Alcoholism research. It is timed to coincide with the Metropolitan Opera "Live in HD" broadcast of La Fanciulla del West the next day, January 8, at Town Hall Theater. (An Encore presentation will be shown on January 9.)

"I am delighted to be coming to Middlebury's Town Hall Theater to speak about La Fanciulla del West to support a very worthy cause," said Mr. Lockhart. "The Met: Live in HD is a marvelously innovative program, and with this talk we will delve into the opera and Puccini's music in a way that I hope will heighten viewers' experience with the production on the 100th anniversary of the opera's premiere."

Peg Calder, president of the Foundation for Alcoholism Research, comments, "We are thrilled to have Mr. Lockhart travel to Middlebury for this exclusive appearance." The proceeds will benefit research into alcoholism - a devastating disease resulting in broken families, lost jobs, and multiple treatments and relapses. Enhanced understanding of this disease will lead to improved treatment methods for the many dedicated medical and counseling professionals in Vermont and elsewhere.

Tickets for the January 7 presentation only are $35; tickets for the presentation and reception are $125 ($75 tax deductible). The presentation begins at 7:30 pm. Tickets may be purchased at www.townhalltheater.org., 802 382-9222, or at the THT Box Office (Mon-Sat, noon-5 pm.) Call FAR at 802-758-2243 for more information.

The Courtyard by Marriott in Middlebury offers discounts for those attending the Lockhart event. A block of rooms will be held until December 30. Call the hotel directly (802) 388-7600 or (800)388-7775. Mention the Keith Lockhart group when making reservations.
