by Sally Henry Fuller - Oct 12, 2014

The Washington Stage Guild announces its 29th season of our distinctive repertory, an array of eloquent plays of idea and argument, passion and wit-smart theatre for a smart town. The 2014-2015 season includes the second part of our multi-year presentation of George Bernard Shaw's BACK TO METHUSELAH, and as the visionary cycle leaps into the future and examines the effect of human advances on relationships, the other three plays also focus on unexpected looks at basic ties to create A SEASON OF LOVE AND/OR MARRIAGE. Two Washington premieres are joined by two plays not seen here in decades, as we offer our first productions by two of Shaw's followers, Frederick Lonsdale and Terence Rattigan, and one by a contemporary American playwright, David Marshall Grant.

Texas Author Pens Mystery Novel Set in Cold War/Vietnam Era
by Matt Smith - Jun 5, 2014

The flight to avoid the killing... It's 1968. The Cold War is hot, the Vietnam War is raging, and the women's movement is beating a far-distant drum. When Austin Starr's husband decides to protest the war by emigrating from Texas to Canada, she goes along, with the biblical dictate of 'whither-thou-goest I will go' ringing in her ears. Leads to murder... No activist herself, Austin is homesick, drowning in culture shock, and now, her husband has been accused of murdering a fellow draft resister, the black-sheep son of a U.S. Senator. Alone and ill-equipped to negotiate in a foreign country, she is befriended by her Russian history professor and his daughter. A desperate race to find the truth... The Mounties aren't supposed to harass draft-age boys but the truth is very different, especially when political pressure is applied by both the victim's father and the Canadian prime minister's office. They may have a reputation for always getting their man, but Austin is convinced this time they have the wrong one. Once courted by the CIA, and a lover of mystery and espionage novels, Austin launches her own investigation into the murder. When ominous letters warning her to stop her sleuthing turn into death threats, Austin must find the real killer or risk losing everything. Her love-and her life-are on the line. 'Desolation Row' is available in both print and ebook formats. BWW Reviews: Singer Janene Lovullo Gifts Us New CD, BROADWAY, INTIMATE
by Don Grigware - Feb 28, 2013

When I first heard Janene Lovullo at Sterling's Upstairs at Vitello's in January of 2010, I was captivated by her beautifully fragile soprano voice and how well she was able to convey the delicacy of the lyrics of each song to a large audience. I also remember telling her how she needed to record, as, unlike many singers, hers is a voice that is ideally suited to record. Well, she released the lovely album This Moment in 2012...and now, just released as of February 2013, comes her second album Broadway, Intimate. As I listened, I can truthfully say that I haven't been this excited about a singer since Joan Ryan's 'Shall We Dance?' several years ago. Unusually different arrangements and an up close, personal interpretation that sends the already popular tune soaring to brand new heights....such are the accomplishments of Janene Lovullo.

SPOTLIGHT ON NY POPS: Angela Lansbury Talks Sondheim, GLEE & More
by Pat Cerasaro - Apr 25, 2011

Legends aren't born, or merely made - they are created; and, so very, very carefully crafted. In equal parts due to her incomparable stage work creating roles in musicals by Stephen Sondheim and Jerry Herman, to her film work encompassing John Frankenheimer and Vincente Minnelli, to name but two, as well as a smash-hit television series - MURDER SHE WROTE - and hosting duties at various Tony Awards and Academy Awards broadcasts over the last half century, have certainly cemented her place in our hearts, minds and entertainment history itself - I am speaking, of course, of the simply exquisite Ms. Angela Lansbury. In this enlightening discussion conducted yesterday we dissect many of her most treasured roles and performances, and Ms. Lansbury provides many warm and wonderful recollections of her astonishingly varied and accomplished tenure onstage and onscreen over the course of her sixty-year-plus career. ANYONE CAN WHISTLE to SWEENEY TODD; MAME to GYPSY; BEDKNOBS AND BROOM STICKS to SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE to the forthcoming MR. POPPER‘S PENGUINS co-starring Jim Carrey - plus, acting with Bette Davis in DEATH ON THE NILE - and much, much more in this special interview! This is all coming in anticipation of Ms. Lansbury's tribute to Bob Hope at the NY Pops gala on May 2, which will also feature performances by Kelli O'Hara and more - whom we continue our SPOTLIGHT ON NY POPS series with later next week. Don't miss them! Further information about the NY POPS event - including tickets - is available here.
