There are just three perfromances left of THE MIKADO at the Freeport Performing Arts Center. Set in the fictional Japanese village of Titipu, Gilbert & Sullivan's comic opera satirizes aspects of British society, culture and manners circa 1860 that have remarkable parallels to modern-day American society. But setting aside the deeper meaning: the music is terrific, the characters are marvelous, and the story is full of the comic twists, turns and wordplay you expect from G&S. They will keep you laughing right to the end.
With beautiful, golden sets and a blessedly wonderful cast, the problem with Lamplighter's production of "The Mikado" does not result from a lack of talent. Actually, the production lacks very little and would verge on perfection if it weren't for slow comedic timing, missed opportunities for extra humor and a few occurrences of singing not in time with the orchestra.

No, that nice young man offering to pour you a glass of wine as you enter the New York Theatre Workshop's auditorium is not an intern or an Equity membership candidate earning weeks; it's one of the three madcap musicians who will be spending the next two hours trading punch lines, wheeling a trio of pianos around the stage and, somehow through it all, taking the inspiration for their antics from Franz Schubert's 1827 song cycle, Winterreise.
