HOT MIKADO Opens at Landor Theatre, October 10

By:

For the Landor Theatre, Theatrica Ltd presents HOT MIKADO, with book and lyrics adapted by David H. Bell, music adapted and arranged by Rob Bowman and based on "The Mikado" by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. Landor's production will be directed by Robert McWhir, featuring choreography by Robbie O'Reilly, musical direction by Michael Webborn and lighting design by Richard Lambert

Picture a little town in Japan where flirting is punishable by death. Unsurprisingly, its citizens are finding the law rather, well... tiresome. They appoint Ko Ko, a lowly tailor, as Lord High Executioner, himself condemned for flirting and so not likely to execute anyone. Throw in the beautiful Yum Yum, her ardent admirer Nanki-Poo, errant son of the Mikado, and the man-eater Katisha, and you have one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most famous comic operas in all its wonderful absurdity.

Featuring an intoxicating mix of styles and influences, classics such as A Wand’ring Minstrel I and Three Little Maids are transmuted into show-stopping blues, swing, hot gospel numbers and scorching torch songs. East meets West head-on in this hilarious 1940’s-style update of a Gilbert and Sullivan favourite. Find out what happens when the clean lines and colour of Japanese design combine with the big band sights and sounds of popular American song and dance!

Nominated for Best New Musical at the 1995 Olivier Awards, HOT MIKADO is a rib-tickling fresh musical comedy, bursting at the seams with amazing song and dance numbers...So, welcome to the swinging streets of Titipu – where the designer accessory of choice is a trumpet, and no self-respecting citizen walks, when they could tap dance or sashay instead.

Originally produced at Ford's Theatre, Washington DC, USA. Frankie Hewitt, Producing Director. Performed by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Limited on behalf of the authors.

HOT MIKADO will play Wednesday 10th October - Saturday 3rd November, running Tuesday - Saturday at 7.30pm and Saturday & Sunday at 3pm. Tickets are £20, £18 concessions. Press Night is set for Thursday 11th October.
