Downtown Urban Arts Festival (DUAF), an annual multi-disciplinary arts event -- with cultural offerings in theater, film, music and poetry -- presented in various downtown Manhattan venues, kicked off on Saturday, April 8th with a sold-out concert from legendary chart-topper Lisa Lisa ("I Wonder If I Take You Home," "Can You Feel the Beat," "All Cried Out," "Head to Toe," "Lost in Emotion") at Joe's Pub at The Public.

In honor of Trans Awareness Week (November 14-20) and in light of the recent election results, Honest Accomplice Theatre (HAT) launches The Trans Literacy Project -- In these videos you can hear trans people speaking to the things they find important for others to know. While a seemingly simple concept, this is one of the first web series about trans people's experiences from the perspective of trans people.
Theater at DUAF Announces 2017 Finalists

THEATER at Downtown Urban Arts Festival (DUAF) has announced the finalists for its 15th Anniversary season to run at the Cherry Lane Theatre and Joe's Pub at The Public Theater during spring 2017. The finalists were selected from over 100 submissions from some of the nation's most talented emerging playwrights. THEATER is produced by Creative Ammo Inc. and Reg E. Gaines, two-time Tony nominee, returns as THEATER's Artistic Director.

Devising new work is a democratic anecdote to the capitalist commercialization of American theater. By holding space for the invisible, we can begin to build language around systemic oppression and foster curiosity across minority statuses. Moreover, the devising process provides an opportunity for? an? ensemble to dig beyond the murky concept of intersectionality and become active allies to each other's experiences. The conversation that begins in the rehearsal room of a devised theater piece is only the first of an ongoing dialogue that continues as the audience leaves the theater.

Long-time collaborators Felicia Lobo (Insomnium Theatre Company) and Zach Donovan (Subtle Pride) have teamed up to present the world premiere of Donovan's latest play, BIRTHDAY PLAY. BIRTHDAY PLAY will be presented in a limited engagement run at The Alchemical Theatre Lab (104 W. 14th St., NYC) from August 5th through August 7th.
