Classic Stage Company has announced that its new production of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's Pacific Overtures, directed and designed by Tony Award winner John Doyle, which opens Thursday, May 4 at CSC (136 East 13th Street) will extend its limited engagement through Sunday, June 18 due to popular demand.
Zachary Noah Piser (Wicked), Elena Wang (Allegiance) and Karl Josef Co (Pacific Overtures) will lead the first full industry presentations of TIANANMEN, a new musical directed by Stafford Arima (Allegiance, Altarboyz) and written by Scott Elmegreen and Drew Fornarola (off-Broadway's STRAIGHT) with musical direction by Rodney Bush. The readings will be held on April 27th and 28th in midtown.

As BroadwayWorld reported yesterday, Allegiance will play its final performance on Broadway on Sunday, February 14, 2016. Performances began at the Longacre Theatre on October 6, 2015 and the production officially opened on November 8, 2015. At the time of its closing it will have played 37 previews and 113 regular performances. In light of the announcement, we're taking a trip down memory lane to the show's road to Broadway!
This week's spotlight is on composer/lyricist Drew Fornarola and bookwriter Scott Elmgreen. TIANANMEN is an original rock musical that follows the events of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in Beijing, focusing on the stories of three student demonstrators and the Communist leaders they dare to challenge. The students communicate through music while government leaders communicate through spoken dialogue, and in this way the show uses musical theatre to starkly and viscerally portray the generational and cultural divides that come between both sides. Selections from Tiananmen premiered in a March 2014 concert at 54 Below starring Telly Leung, Ruthie Ann Miles, and Karl Josef Co, and the show continues to be developed under the artistic guidance of director Stafford Arima and with academic support from the Harvard University Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations. The Denver Center Theatre Company presents the highly anticipated new adaptation of Meredith Willson's classic musical, THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN. Based on the book by Richard Morris, the revitalized production will feature a new book and additional lyrics by three-time Tony Award nominee Dick Scanlan (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and showcase never before heard songs from Willson's prolific body of work with musical adaptation by Michael Rafter(Violet).
