Classical works by varying composers will be masterfully presented by the Millersville University Chamber Ensemble and Orchestra on Friday, November 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Winter Center. Pieces will include Borodin's Polovetsian Dances, a selection from Felix Mendelssohn, an aria from Puccini's opera Tosca, the famous La Donna e Mobile by Verdi, an Italian song by De Curtis--featuring New York City's tenor Alok Kumar--and Beethoven's great 5th Symphony, with its unofficial title 'Fate Knocking at the Door.' Kerensa Gray is often compared to the likes of jazz royalty - Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, and contemporaries such as Diana Krall. This performance is a look back at the women of jazz who continue to captivate generations with their unique voices and stories woven into the history of this country, as well as a glimpse of some favorite contemporaries. Multi-award winning Gaelic singer and instrumentalist, Julie Fowlis, will perform “Music of the Scottish Isles” at the Ware Center tonight, October 15 at 7:30 PM. The band includes vibraphonist Tony Miceli, vocalist/harmonist Paul Jost, and bassist Kevin MacConnell. Devoted to presenting innovative arrangements of classic rock in a jazz format, The Jost Project plays the music of the 60's and 70's. "Celebrate with Song and Dance!" will feature the Orchestra, Concert Band, and Wind Ensemble of Millersville University on Sunday, October 11 at 2:30 PM at the Winter Center presented by the MU Department of Music. The concert will feature selections from Beethoven's 5th Symphony, Borodin's The Polovetsian Dances, J. P. Sousa's The Washington Post, Norman Dello Joio's Satiric Dances, and a setting of the American folk song, "Shenandoah" by Frank Ticheli. Millersville University instructor and internationally accomplished percussionist James Armstrong will perform Caribbean and West African influenced repertoire at the Winter Center on Sunday October 11, 7:30 PM. He will be joined by regional artists Danny Stuber (piano), Mike Vitale (bass) and John Peifer (drums) in this presentation of latin and jazz standards and arrangements. Extensive fieldwork and collaboration with local musician masters in West Africa, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and the United States have rendered Armstrong a specialist in Haitian, Cuban, and West African based folkloric drumming.
