Ah, yes. 2013 was indeed an outstanding year for theater in Southern California. Even better: Orange County---my home base---boasted some of the best shows, period---marking an exciting theater renaissance in brilliance and artistry that I hope continues to grow here inside L.A.'s next door neighbor. With that said, here is my Top 10 Stage Shows of 2013 from Orange County and adjacent locales nearby, followed by my picks for the year's best performances.

The evening of December 13th, 2013 was sparkle and jolly for all who attended the KIDS PERFORMING WHO KARE BROADWAY CHRISTMAS CONCERT at the Rockville Links Club in Rockville Centre, NY, to benefit the Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop University Hospital. The season is upon us, and as we rush to local stores to score the best presents for our families and loved ones, we should remember those who are less fortunate. Broadway performers Krista Buccellato (Cathy Rigby's Peter Pan), Kristy Cates (WICKED), Joshua Henry (The Scottsboro Boys, Porgy and Bess, American Idiot), Eliseo Roman (In the Heights, Leap of Faith), and Jodi Stevens (Jekyll and Hyde, Urban Cowboy) have teamed up with the non profit theatrical group of young thespians from the tri state area - Kids Performing Who Kare. Together they will do their best to spread holiday cheer in the season of giving during its Broadway Christmas concert and dinner. This December, January and February, 54 BELOW presents an exciting lineup of the brightest talent from Broadway and beyond. Located just below the legendary Studio 54 at 254 West 54th Street.

Two-time Tony winner Sutton Foster starred in the Encores! Off-Center presentation of VIOLET back in July, and BroadwayWorld has just learned the the star will lead the show on Broadway in the Spring of 2014. Foster, who was previously set to play Sarasota's Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, had to cancel her March engagement because of a scheduling conflict with the upcoming production.

On October 12th, noted arranger and producer, Fred Barton, whose work is heard regularly in concert halls around the country, celebrated composer Richard Rodgers on the Schimmel stage. Fred Barton, his 12-piece orchestra and star-studded cast of performers are back to celebrate the legendary Richard Rodgers! The extraordinary icon's career spanned six decades, during which he composed 40 Broadway musicals. Fred's tribute to the versatility of Richard Rodgers will prove a revelation to those familiar with his biggest hits: Oklahoma!, South Pacific, Carousel, and The Sound of Music. You'll hear Richard Rodgers from his razz-ma-tazz roots to his later masterworks, created with a number of star lyricists. Join us as we journey from Broadway to Hollywood and back, celebrating the incredible music and tales of Richard Rodgers!

Summer Concerts on the Hudson will present a one-night-only celebration of the Great White Way on Monday, August 26th at 7 PM. Featured performers include: Beth Leavel (Tony Award, The Drowsy Chaperone), Vivian Reed (Tony nominee, Bubbling Brown Sugar and Marie Christine), Joshua Henry (Tony nominee, The Scottsboro Boys), John Bolton (A Christmas Story), Max Von Essen (Evita), Tari Kelly (Anything Goes), Jeff McCarthy (Beauty And The Beast), and Patti Murin (Lysistrata Jones).

Groundswell Theatricals is pleased to announce a reading of Let Loose the Horses, a new rock musical with music and lyrics by Rob Giles and The Rescues, with a book by Scott Cameron, and with direction and choreography by Andrew Palermo. The reading will take place on August 22.
