Taking their successful and groundbreaking dance-music-theater work to new levels, award-winning choreographers Janice Garrett and Charles Moulton will present the world premiere of Speak, Angels, a new evening-length work for 36 dancers, singers and instrumentalists, July 28-31 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater. Following the sold-out success of their 2014-15 production of The Luminous Edge, Garrett and Moulton continue their work with large-scale, multi-genre performances, once again collaborating with Composer/Bass Clarinetist Jonathan Russell and contralto Karen Clark. Twenty-four dancers—including a “movement choir”—are joined by five singers and an ensemble of instrumental musicians in a work celebrating the providential voices that guide us through our lives.

Generations mix and The Great American Songbook's writers are in the cabaret mix--starting with Irving Berlin--when star of stage/TV/film (and, belatedly, cabaret) Anita Gillette and other established performers honor the composer-lyricist giant. Veteran stars like Gillette will join forces with young teen performers in the new series Cabaret Scenes with Cabaret Teens, at Manhattan's Metropolitan Room, as part of the "weekend matinee shift." Steve Ross, the veteran globe-trotting entertainer dubbed the "Crown Prince of Cabaret," and well-versed in the verses and choruses of Berlin, will guest on August 4, along with vocalist Frank Dain, who is also the editor of Cabaret Scenes Magazine, the only print magazine specializing in cabaret. The program is titled for its non-profit Foundation as a beneficiary for the concerts, along with charities serving needy teens. Nightclub and record star Karen Wyman will also sing and add her perspective, while also guesting is multi-award winning vocalist Karen Oberlin.

The event should have been titled '520 Mondays.' On Monday, July 1, Birdland celebrated the tenth anniversary of 'Jim Caruso's Cast Party,' the unique and very extreme weekly open mic. Gianni Valenti, the owner of the historic music room, honored host Caruso with a Seth Walters portrait on the wall, usually reserved for jazz icons. (Caruso quipped, 'Somewhere, Charlie Parker is very uncomfortable.')

It was one of the most love-filled, musically-thrilling birthday parties ever, when the folks at Jim Caruso's Cast Party celebrated the 85th Birthday of the most energetic, vocally dazzling, swinging nightclub divas on Earth, Marvelous Marilyn Maye. Scroll below for photos from the concert!
