Minnesota Opera announces its commission of The Shining, a new opera by composer Paul Moravec and librettist Mark Campbell, based on the 1977 best-selling novel by Stephen King. Minnesota Opera will give The Shining its world premiere in May 2016 at Ordway in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Manhattan Theatre Club's world premiere of THE COMMONS OF PENSACOLA, the new play by Amanda Peet, directed by MTC's award-winning artistic director Lynne Meadow, begins rehearsals today. The limited engagement will start previews Tuesday, October 22 and open Thursday, November 21 at MTC at New York City Center - Stage I (131 West 55th Street).

Arthur Kopit, playwright, librettist, screenwriter, adapter and mentor, a multiple Tony and Drama Desk and Pulitzer Prize nominee, will be the Honoree of the 33rd Annual William Inge Theatre Festival in Independence, Kansas, at Independence Community College.

Minnesota Opera is pleased to announce casting updates for the 2013–2014 season, which boasts three company premieres and five productions new to Minnesota audiences. Based on anticipated demand, the boundary-busting production of The Magic Flutewill receive nine performances. Minnesota Opera is also pleased to announce the roster for the 2013–2014 Resident Artist Program, as well as unveil a new website.

Atlantic Theater Company has just announced that Robert Beitzel, Halley Feiffer, Susan Pourfar and Tony Award nominee Deborah Rush will star in the world premiere production of Academy Award winner Ethan Coen's first full length play WOMEN OR NOTHING, staged by acclaimed director David Cromer.

Vassar & New York Stage and Film Powerhouse Theater's second Martel Musical Workshop, A Musical Inspired by the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Company has its first performance on Friday, July 26 at 8pm. The 4-performance run continues on Saturday, July 27 at 8pm, and Sunday, July 28 at 2pm and 7pm.

John Patrick Shanley's Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning play "Doubt" is and intense and stunning piece of work to be sure but it's far from bullet proof. In order to fully realize the power of the play you need four amazing actors willing to dive into the conviction and vulnerabilities of the characters. And while I've seen better (how can you compete with Cherry Jones on Broadway?), Theatre 9/12's current production may start off to an uneven start but it ultimately amounts to a solid and engaging piece of theater and is completely worthy of the script.
