Asolo Rep Announces UNPLUGGED Schedule

Unplugged, Asolo Rep's fourth annual festival of new plays, showcases the freshest new talents writing for the theatre today. Presented in a bare-bones staged reading format, audiences have a chance to experience fascinating new works in the earliest stages of their development. Led by Associate Artistic Director and Festival Curator Greg Leaming, Unplugged has given Asolo Rep the opportunity to supplement its season with new works. The highlight of this year's festival is the premiere of the 2011 Greenfield Prize-commissioned work by eminent Tony Award winning playwright John Guare (Six Degrees of Separation, House of Blue Leaves), Eddie in the Andes. Each reading will be followed by a Q&A session with the playwright and the director.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced Finn Wittrock as The Actor, Sarah Wayne Callies as The Actress, and Shuler Hensley as The Critic in the Kennedy Center production of The Guardsman in the Eisenhower Theater May 25 to June 23, 2013. Based on the 1910 comedy by Hungarian playwright Ferenc Molnar, The Guardsman features a new literal translation by Richard Nelson and is directed by Gregory Mosher. The press opening will take place on Thursday, May 30 at 7:30 p.m.

Beck Center for the Arts presents John Guare's award-winning play, The House of Blue Leaves, March 22 through April 21, 2013 on the Mackey Main Stage. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays. There is no performance on Sunday, March 31. Tickets are now on sale.

Today in 2002, Sweet Smell of Success opened at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre), where it ran for 109 performances. Created by Marvin Hamlisch (music), Craig Carnelia (lyrics), and John Guare (book), the show is based on the 1957 movie of the same name. It tells the story of a powerful newspaper columnist named J. J. Hunsecker (based on famed New York columnist Walter Winchell) who uses his connections to ruin his sister's relationship with a man he deems inappropriate. The show starred John Lithgow as J.J. Hunsecker, and Brian d'Arcy James as Sidney Falcone.
