Thanks to the generous support of the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Brooklyn-based theatre company Colt Coeur (Dry Land by Ruby Rae Spiegel, Everything is Ours, by Nikole Beckwith) has commissioned playwright Amelia Roper to create an original play over the next year, with an eye towards production in the company's 2015-2016 season.

Lynne Meadow and Barry Grove have announced initial Broadway casting for Manhattan Theatre Club's presentation of Steppenwolf Theatre Company's production of Airline Highway, the new play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Lisa D'Amour (Detroit), directed by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Casa Valentina, Take Me Out).

I guess when you're are a writer of Stephen King's stature you can't help be subject to expectations that are often simply too hard to live up to. Most of the criticism directed at THE GHOST BROTHERS OF DARKLAND COUNTY centers around the book he's cooked up for the show. He and composer (and rock icon) John Mellencamp had been kicking around this idea for about a dozen years, and when it was finally staged it was savaged in a number of ways, with most of the vitriol centered on King's narrative. I wonder if those critics felt the same way a few days after they'd posted their reviews. For me, I've found that the haunting mix of music and imagery has lingered in my memory long after I'd thought it would abate. Charged acting, a terrific roots rock and blues-inflected score, and a story that plays upon simmering tensions that threaten to boil over for the McCandless family, combine to produce something truly special and worthy of appreciation.

Rehearsals started today for the Alliance Theatre's upcoming world premiere BULL DURHAM, a new musical based on the beloved 1988 film, which Sports Illustrated proclaimed to be the '#1 Greatest Sports Movie of All-time.' Directed by Kip Fagan (Off-Broadway: The Revisionist), BULL DURHAM has a book by Academy Award-nominee Ron Shelton (director and screenwriter of the Bull Durham movie) and music and lyrics by Susan Werner, whom the Chicago Tribune called, 'one of the most innovative songwriters working today.' Colt Coeur's Play Hotel reading series will present a free staged reading of Love Shack in '87 by Ryan King, directed by Adrienne Campbell-Holt, April 9th at 7:15pm at SoHo House in Manhattan. The cast for the reading includes Nadia Gan (Golden Child), Genesis Oliver (Everything is Ours, Colt Coeur), Matt Stadelmann (The Grown-Up, Humana), Chris Thorn (Twelfth Night, Pig Iron), and Joe Tippett (Ashville, Rattlestick). The event is hosted by Erica Rotstein and Sam Goldberg.

On the eve of Valentine's Day, Kara Lindsay, currently starring in Disney's 'Newsies' on Broadway, was joined on-stage by her husband Kevin Massey (Memphis), her college best friend Kirsten Scott (Big Fish), Santino Fontana ('Frozen'), his girlfriend Jessica Hershberg (Cinderella), Drew Gehling (Jersey Boys), his wife Sara Jean Ford (The Phantom of the Opera), Patrick Cummings (Happiness), his girlfriend, Alessa Neeck (Cinderella), Thea Brooks (Dirty Dancing), and musical director Benjamin Rauhala (Hit List) in a celebration of Broadway romance, both on and off-stage. The evening will also feature bluegrass trio 'Shubert Alley,' featuring Kevin Massey, his brother Patrick Massey, and Jamison Scott (Spider-Man). Also featured in the concert were Aaron Albano (Newsies), Stephen Joshua Thompson, Antwayn Hopper (Hair), and Devin Ilaw (Les Miserables). Rattlestick Playwrights Theater announced the 2013 F*ck!ng Good Plays (festival, IV) -three (3) days of new play readings by four (4) of today's hottest playwrights. The festival, to be presented at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater (224 Waverly Place - off 7th Avenue South between West 11th & Perry Streets) will begin on Monday the 16th, and continue on Wednesday the 18th and Thursday the 19th. Playwrights include: Denis Johnson, Basil Kreimendahl, Michael Laurence, and Jen Silverman. The readings will be directed by David Kennedy, Lisa Peterson, Francine Volpe, and Davis McCallum.

Lucy Thurber's The Hill Town Plays, a cycle of five plays--Scarcity, Ashville, Where We're Born, Killers and Other Family, and Stay--began previews August 14, 2013, with an official opening night for all five plays on September 5, 2013. The closing date is today, September 28, 2013.
