Review - If It Only Even Runs A Minute

If Mike Nichols and Elaine May ever had a routine about two theatre geeks discussing their favorite unsuccessful musicals, it probably would have resembled the kind of banter that goes on between Jennifer Tepper and Kevin Michael Murphy as creators/producers/hosts of the concert series, If It Only Even Runs A Minute.  Monday night's edition, their seventh, was my third visit to their collection of one-nighters where musical theatre well-knowns and not so well-knowns join music director/pianist Caleb Hoyer to sing selections from underappreciated and/or forgotten musicals between quick histories of each production by Tepper and Murphy.  Frequently, original cast members will be on hand to give first-person accounts of the bumpy roads to opening night.

Attic Playhouse Announces 2010-2011 Season

It's 1979, and Jon and Leslie are two young, out-of-work, bachelors sharing an apartment together in New York City. To save money, Jon has been filing tax returns listing the pair as married...unbeknownst to his buddy Leslie. The day of reckoning comes when the Internal Revenue Service informs the 'couple' they are going to be investigated by a Mr. Floyd Spinner. With the help of his fiancée - Kate, Jon dresses Leslie up to masquerade as a housewife. Complicating matters further - Jon's mother unexpectedly drops in to meet her son's fiancée, and Leslie's girlfriend shows up demanding to know why he won't see her anymore. Add one unscrupulously nosy landlord to the bunch, and things quickly spiral into side-splitting confusion and chaos in this hilarious farce.

America's on the verge of the H-bomb, Dwight Eisenhower's on the campaign trail, and 'I Love Lucy' is on Monday nights. Meanwhile, Senator Joe McCarthy's daughter just got engaged to a Soviet spy, and Boston detective Maggie Pelletier has to find out who dumped the dead guy in the Harbor - or else lose out on a honeymoon to Havana with her fiancé from the F.B.I. Three love stories, a murder mystery, and a nuclear espionage plot converge in this terrifically funny and farcical 50's-noir comedy about marriage...and other explosive devices.

BWW Reviews: New Jewish Theatre Closes Season with Outstanding Production of LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR

Sometimes when I'm seeing a show about a particular subject I'll look through my library and re-read (or newly purchase) books that pertain to it. When I noticed that the New Jewish Theatre's production of Neil Simon's Laughter on the 23rd Floor was on the schedule, I decided to bone up. So, I picked up Sid Caesar's biography, 'Caesar's Hours', and I also watched a few DVDs of 'Your Show of Shows' and 'Caesar's Hour', as well as thumbing through my copy of Mel Brooks' biography ('It's Good to Be the King'). Attempts have been made before to put on display that elusive magic that took place in the writer's room of those shows, including the Brooksfilm production of My Favorite Year. But, I think LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR best captures the moment, focusing its attention on the actual work and play that went on in the room between the star and his genius stable of writers. The current presentation by the New Jewish Theatre is simply hilarious, and greatly aided by a wonderful cast and terrific direction.
