Westport Country Playhouse announces its 2018 season, featuring five productions that are big for the soul, according to Artistic Director Mark Lamos. The Connecticut professional theater's lineup includes two comedies, one modern and one classic; a drama; a musical; and a world premiere, running from May 29 through November 17.
Americana Theatre Company (ATC), Plymouth's professional theatre company, presents the musical theatre classic Man of La Mancha, starring Boston television personality Scott Wahle in the dual role of Don Quixote/Cervantes, from July 7 through 29, with performances weekly from Thursday through Sunday, at Spire Center for Performing Arts, 25 ½ Court Street, Plymouth. Man of La Mancha is written by Dale Wasserman, with music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion. The production is directed by Michael Kirkland, with music direction by Nancy Sparklin.

Westport Country Playhouse will host a 2018 Season Kick-off Party on Saturday, April 7, from 5 to 8 p.m., offering a fun atmosphere with food trucks, beer tastings, exhibits, and special ticket discounts. In addition, a "Sneak Peek" of the upcoming season will be hosted by Mark Lamos, Playhouse artistic director, at 6:30 p.m. The "Sneak Peek" will feature guests representing all of the upcoming productions, including playwrights, directors, and designers. Transport Group has announced that its Anne L. Bernstein Concert Series of one-night-only musical events will continue with two Broadway classics for the 2017-18 season Man of La Mancha, on Monday, December 18, 2017, and Promises, Promises, on Monday, June 25, both at 8pm at the Merkin Concert Hall at Kaufman Music Center, 129 West 67 Street. Both concerts will be directed by Transport Group artistic director Jack Cummings III and will feature original orchestrations. Casting will be announced at a later date.

As many times as I see Man of La Mancha, I relish the music and high dramatic moments of this classic piece of theatre. Such is the case when the production is top notch, with the perfect actors and highly skilled direction. La Mirada's current revival is top of the line with director Glenn Casale leaving his usual stamp of excellence. The beauty of Man of La Mancha as a musical is that the story is never dated; it lives and breathes in the moment. When it premiered on Broadway in the 1960s it was a winner and now, almost 60 years later, it is just as engrossing. Madness is always fun to play with. What is madness? And...what is normality?
