Interstate, a new musical created by Melissa Li and Kit Yan, has been selected as one of 12 productions to take part in the 2018 New York Musical Festival Next Link Project. The workshop production will open the festival and features a diverse mix of talent while showcasing the journey of two Asian transgender artists. Interstate is directed by Jessi D. Hill, choreographed by Jessica Chen, with music direction by Karen Dryer.

Premiere Stages at Kean University has announced the winner of the 2018 Premiere Play Festival, its annual competition for unproduced scripts written by playwrights affiliated with the greater metropolitan area. The theatre has named Linger by Glen Ridge resident Craig Garcia this year's winner, and will present the play's first professional production this summer as part of the theatre's 14th season in residence at Kean University. The season, which runs June-October, will also feature full productions of Brick City by Ridgewood resident Nicole Pandolfo and Black Tom Island by Jersey City resident Martin Casella, as well as a developmental workshop of this year's runner-up for the Premiere Play Festival, Baton by Brooklyn resident Deneen Reynolds-Knott.

Premiere Stages, the professional theatre company in residence at Kean University, has selected its four finalists for the 2018 Premiere Play Festival and will increase its cash awards for honored playwrights by one-third, the theatre announced today. Premiere Stages received a record 572 submissions for the festival, an annual competition for unproduced scripts that offers developmental opportunities to playwrights with strong affiliations to New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. The 572 submissions marked a 43% jump from 2017, and represented playwrights of all backgrounds and ages. For the first time in the festival's 14-year history, three of the four finalist scripts selected were requested from synopses submitted by playwrights.

Shakespeare Academy @ Startford's Artistic Director Brian McManamon invites the public to attend free public performances of Measure for Measure and The Tempest in rotating repertory on the grounds of The Shakespeare American Festival Theater from July 29th-August 6th. McManamon will direct Measure for Measure, which opens July 30th at 8:00 p.m. and Guest Director Jessi D. Hill will direct The Tempest, which opens on July 29th at 6:30 p.m.

Project Y Theatre Company presents the World Premiere of GREAT AGAIN, an evening of plays in two parts: The Test by Crystal Skillman (directed by Jessi D. Hill) and In the Line by Chiori Miyagawa (directed by Kristin Horton and choreographed by Sonoko Kawahara). This double bill of new plays was commissioned by Project Y Theatre Company, written as a response to the November 2016 election and presented as the centerpiece of the 2nd Annual Women in Theatre Festival dedicated to broadening opportunities for women playwrights. GREAT AGAIN runs through June 24 at the Jeffrey and Paula Gural Theatre at the A.R.T./New York Theatres with opening set for Tuesday, June 6. Premiere Stages will kick off its 13th season in residence at Kean University with a free staged reading of 1980 (Or Why I'm Voting For John Anderson), Patricia Cotter's entertaining portrait of a beleaguered campaign office, June 16-18 in Kean's Murphy Dunn Theatre.

For the first time in its 13-year history, Premiere Stages will provide expanded development to five new works in one season, including the New Jersey Premiere of Skeleton Crew, the third play in Dominique Morisseau's critically acclaimed Detroit cycle, and the first professional production of Chris Cragin-Day's heartwarming play, Foster Mom, winner of the 2017 Premiere Stages Play Festival. This season will also feature free developmental workshops of Patricia Cotter's 1980 (Or Why I'm Voting For John Anderson), runner-up for the 2017 Play Festival, and two exciting new play commissions, Nicole Pandolfo's Brick City, developed in cooperation with NJPAC and the New Jersey Theatre Alliance, and Martin Casella's Black Tom Island, recipient of the 2017/2018 Liberty Live Commission in partnership with Liberty Hall Museum. Tickets go on sale May 22.
