The September Play Project, or #SPP, launches its inaugural year with a series of new works on the rooftop space of The Delancey, 168 Delancey Street, New York, NY 10002 on September 13th and 14, 2014. Both performances will be at 5 PM. The plays are all 6 minutes in length and set outdoors. The series was conceived by co­producers Jenny Gomez and Jessica Mazo. The aim of the Project is to provide a diverse set of artists with a comfortable platform where they can create, with full production support. 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales will be split evenly between all the playwrights, actors, and directors that have volunteered their time and talent for the project.

Primary Stages Einhorn School of Performing Arts has announced casting for its ESPA Drills Reading Series this August. ESPA Drills is an annual new play development program providing staged readings to four playwrights. The plays are workshopped under the guidance of the ESPA staff and will be presented before an audience of industry peers Off-Broadway at The Duke on 42nd Street.

There's a great Hollywood myth about the film version of The Color Purple. The beloved classic about African-American women was directed by the very male and very white Steven Spielberg, but he allegedly almost quit the project days before shooting was to begin. According to legend, Steven called the film's producer, Quincy Jones, a few days before shooting to voice his doubts about the project. 'I don't think I should direct this,' Steven said. 'I'm a white Jewish guy from California. What do I know about African-American women from the South?' To this, Quincy replied, 'Steven, are you an alien? Because you directed E.T., and I think that was pretty good.' Spielberg stayed on as director, and the film was a huge success that earned 11 Oscar nominations.

Two River Theater, under the leadership of Artistic Director John Dias and Managing Director Michael Hurst, has announced that the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has awarded the theater a generous $40,000 grant through the foundation's Building Demand for the Arts program, which launched last year and funds inventive partnerships that create new methods for reaching the public and developing their interest in and access to the performing arts.
