The curtain rises on a hotel room out of town, and songwriters in the midst of a desperate, all-night creative frenzy to save a faltering show. Lyrics & Lyricists 2016 season opens with real-life theatrical drama as three-time Tony-winner Kathleen Marshall returns to 92Y with the nail-biting stories behind the 11th-hour songs that saved the day and became Broadway classics. The show runs January 9-11 at 92Y.

Described as “An Afternoon of Famous Duets,” Saturday's Urban Stages Winter Rhythms presentation (Day Four of the 11-day, 20-show festival) was unexpectedly sweeping in its approach, covering duos that sang pop, folk, jazz, Great American Songbook, and musical theater tunes. With veteran cabaret singer Sue Matsuki serving as producer and host, and Musical Director Gregory Toroian on piano, the show encompassed both the predictable and the surprising and was a genuine pleasure.

The annual Christmastime musical revue which the Good Theater presents has grown incrementally bigger, more complex, more sparkling, and more striking each season. This year's two-hour songfest, written and directed by Brian P. Allen, is dedicated to the musicals of the 1930s and with some dozen performers and an excellent musical combo, the evening proves a delightful tribute to the great American songwriters and a cheerful way to ring in the holidays.

Happy Birthday, Ira Gershwin! A lyricist, Gershwin collaborated with his younger brother, composer George Gershwin, to create some of the most memorable songs of the 20th century. With George he wrote more than a dozen Broadway shows, featuring songs such as 'I Got Rhythm', 'Embraceable You', 'The Man I Love' and 'Someone to Watch Over Me'. He was also responsible, along with DuBose Heyward, for the libretto to George's opera Porgy and Bess. The success the brothers had with their collaborative works has often overshadowed the creative role that Ira played. However, his mastery of songwriting continued after the early death of George. He wrote additional hit songs with composers Jerome Kern ('Long Ago (and Far Away)'), Kurt Weill and Harold Arlen.

Musical Theater and Jazz Superstar Florencia Cuenca will bring her show The New Standards to the internationally acclaimed jazz cabaret The Metropolitan Room. The show is arranged and directed by musical theater composer, Jaime Lozano.

This December, Sheffield Theatres will bring to life one of the most romantic musicals of all time, when their lavish new production of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II's epic musical, Show Boat, opens on the Crucible stage from Thursday 10 December until Saturday 23 January.

Attending a Steve Ross show is often akin to time travel. Good Theater has announced the annual presentation of its Broadway at Good Theater concerts December 2-6.  These fundraising events feature two special guests, Broadway star Kenita R. Miller, singing sensation Nicolas Callaway Foster and a dozen Good Theater performers. 

After traveling the country for the past two years, MEN ARE FROM MARS - WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS LIVE! is making its Off-Broadway debut, it began performances on October 22; and will open this weekend on November 7 running through November 29, 2015 at New World Stages (340 West 50 Street).
