CABARET LIFE NYC: KAREN OBERLIN and SEAN HARKNESS Concoct Romantic Musical Chemistry at the Metropolitan Room
by Stephen Hanks
- Jun 14, 2014
Cabaret performers thinking about launching duo shows could certainly take a lesson in chemistry from watching and listening to singer Karen Oberlin and guitarist Sean Harkness in their current show, A Wish, which is based on their superb recently released CD of the same title, launched with two shows at Kitano on February 1 (to celebrate the CD release), and has taken up a once a month residency until late August at the Metropolitan Room (the next show is on June 25 at 9:30 pm). While theirs is not a romantic off-stage chemistry (both are happily quite happily married, thank you), on stage and in the recording studio Oberlin and Harkness have concocted a delicious musical interaction that conjures up romance to the nth degree.

STAGE TUBE: Highlights from San Francisco Opera's SHOW BOAT
by Stage Tube
- Jun 5, 2014
A true classic of American musical theater, this tale of life on the Mississippi from the 1880s to the 1920s is both a poignant love story and a powerful reminder of the bitter legacy of racism. Director Francesca Zambello's grand-scale production is 'a triumph-a stylish, fast-paced and colorful show that had the capacity audience on its feet, cheering loud and long' (Chicago Classical Review). The magnificent Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein II score, which includes such classic songs as 'Ol' Man River,' 'Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man,' 'Make Believe' and 'You Are Love,' will sound glorious 'under the authoritative baton of music-theater maestro John DeMain' (Chicago Tribune). 'No one should miss it' (Chicago Sun-Times).
BWW Reviews: Kritzerland at Sterling's Upstairs at The Federal Salutes Songwriter Dorothy Fields
by Shari Barrett
- Jun 2, 2014
The 46th Kritzerland show on Sunday, June 1 featured one of the most influential female lyricists of all time, the great Dorothy Fields. In a time when Tin Pan Alley was almost exclusively a male-dominated club, Dorothy Fields rose to the top, first writing hit after hit with Jimmy McHugh, and later becoming one of the first female lyricists on Broadway and in film. Fields created some of the cleverest and most beautiful lyrics ever written, and was a master of the craft who forged the way for so many other talented female lyricists. There was no one like Dorothy Fields.

BWW Reviews: Loving Each Feather and Spangle of A GAY MAN'S GUIDE TO BROADWAY
by Jamie McGonnigal
- May 20, 2014
'A Gay Man's Guide to Broadway,' though a bit redundant in its titling, was a delightful romp highlighting not just LGBT characters, but equality overall throughout musical theatre history. Opening with 'Hello' from the still-impossible-to-snag-a-ticket-to Book of Mormon through a stirring a cappella arrangement of 'I Dreamed a Dream' (hauntingly and beautifully performed by Kevin Thomason - in the original Patti LuPone key, no less), the performance was an evenly-organized collection of well and lesser-known Broadway tunes.

by Nicole Rosky
- May 19, 2014
Today in 1946, the second Broadway revival of Showboat opened at the Ziegfeld Theatre, and ran for 418 performances. Show Boat is a musical in two acts with music by Jerome Kern and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It was originally produced in New York in 1927 and in London in 1928, and was based on the 1926 novel of the same name by Edna Ferber. The plot chronicles the lives of those living and working on the Cotton Blossom, a Mississippi River show boat, from 1880 to 1927. The show's dominant themes include racial prejudice and tragic, enduring love.
