CSO Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni will conduct the CSO's first performances in the Southern Theatre for the 2013-14 season, opening with the Suites & Songs program featuring guest mezzo-soprano Abigail Fischer and works from Respigh, Ravel, and Peter Liberson. Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin composition pays graceful homage to Francois Couperin and the other composers of eighteenth-century France. The CSO will also perform two additional movements from the original piano suite orchestrated by Jean-Marie. Ottorino Respighi's sparkling suite Trittico Botticelliano portrays the delightful paintings of Italian master Sandro Botticelli. Audiences will also enjoy Peter Lieberson's gorgeous musical love letters derived from the sonnets of Nobel prize-winning Chilean poet Pablo Neruda in Neruda Songs, featuring Kim Harrison Hopcraft as narrator.
Mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe - coming off a starring role in Robert Lepage's production of the Ring Cycle at New York's Metropolitan Opera - heads to Chicago for her Harris Theater debut, performing alongside the award-winning French-Canadian ensemble Les Violons du Roy and Music Director Bernard Labadie, October 17 at 7:30 pm. Ms. Blythe and Les Violons du Roy stop in Chicago as part of their North American tour running October 14 - 27.

The Columbus Symphony today announced the appointment of Jean-Sebastien Roy to the position of concertmaster. The Montrealnative has been contracted to lead the Symphony for one year, and will be responsible for working closely with Music Director Jean-Marie Zeitouni and the conducting staff to enhance the artistic product, provide leadership and expertise within the violin section, and serve as a CSO spokesperson within the Columbus community.
The Columbus Symphony and Chorus will open this special program with the world premiere of Of Songs and Singing by the widely acclaimed composer Stephen Paulus, commissioned in honor of and conducted by Ronald Jenkins, director of the Columbus Symphony Chorus and Chamber Chorus since 1982. Winner of the 2008 Montreal International Music Competition, Armenian-born Nareh Arghamanyan is one of the finest pianists of today's promising young generation and will perform the Tchaikovsky work. The program will also include Glinka's Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla.
At the annual meeting held in Boston on September 24, the Handel and Haydn Society (H&H) presented its audited financial statements for the year ending June 30, 2012 and announced that it had balanced its budget in addition to reaching key organizational accomplishments for the 2011-2012 Season. Also discussed was the undertaking a strategic planning process and development of a five-year Strategic Plan set to guide the organization through its 2015 Bicentennial and beyond.
