BWW Review: Deborah Cox is Queen of the Night in THE BODYGUARD

Explosive and suspenseful, The Bodyguard, the musical, offers a modern take on the 1992 silver screen classic starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. The stage version, touring across America but stopping in Pittsburgh this week, stars Canadian R&B artist Deborah Cox and features thrilling theatrics that accompany the melodrama.

BWW Review: Highs and Lows at THE BODYGUARD: THE MUSICAL

The musical THE BODYGUARD is based on the 1992 film of the same name, which is best known for Whitney Houston's cover of the song I Will Always Love You . It's rather telling that that movie is best known for a song, and that seems to have been the impetus behind relaunching as a musical. This stage version follows the plot of the movie loosely--a famous singer has a stalker which requires hiring a more disciplined bodyguard, danger and romance ensue; but the stage version relies much more on vocal talents than acting. The casting of Grammy award winner Deborah Cox is a clear signal that this is much more music focused than plot driven, but even so, walking the line between concert and musical doesn't come easy for this production, even though the performances are largely quite satisfying.

BWW Review: Decent Voices in Paramount's THE BODYGUARD but Not the Queen of the Night

In the latest in the spate of movies turned musicals with no new music to speak of to turn up in Seattle, following in the trend of Dirty Dancing or the egregious Flashdance , we've now been offered up The Bodyguard . And while the current offering didn't live up, or should I say down, to the aforementioned maniac , this romance shoe-horned into a Whitney Houston cover band didn't live up to the Queen of the Night either with its lackluster and stiff performances.

BWW Review: Music Provides the Highlights for THE BODYGUARD at the Fox Theatre

There have been some truly successful musicals that have been adapted from films, and there have been more than a few that just didn't work. Often, what plays well on screen simply doesn't translate to the stage, no matter how much technical wizardry you utilize. THE BODYGUARD isn't the worst musical taken from a movie that I've ever seen, there are certainly plenty of other contenders for that title, but it seems slightly misguided to me. It isn't a jukebox musical or a revue, and it's not authorized by the estate of Whitney Houston, although its score is made up of selections from the movie along with additional songs from Houston's catalog. But, maybe that would have been a better direction to take since the show changes so many key elements from the film (screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan, disappointing adaptation by recent Academy Award winner Alexander Dinelaris) that only act to weaken the story, not improve upon it. Fans of the flick, and particularly of Houston, will probably enjoy it for the musical performances more than anything, and in that respect I can see the appeal. Others may find it a bit flat and forced, a least in regards to the dramatic aspects.

BWW Review: THE BODYGUARD Brings the Movie to Life at the Peace Center

More so even than the original film, the musical version of The Bodyguard centers around flashy concert-style production numbers, complete with flashing lights, rising platforms, and a dazzling array of costumes. It's practically a movie come to life.
