BWW Review: OBSESSION, Barbican

'Everybody wants passion,' says Ivo van Hove in the programme interview for his latest show, but in both tone and aesthetic, his take on this doomed romance is less red-hot fire of ardour, more the cold, grey ash left in the wake of a consuming flame. It's intermittently beautiful and thoughtful, but lacks the necessary fervour that binds lover to lover, and audience to material.

BWW Review: HEDDA GABLER, National Theatre
by Jenny Gilbert
- Dec 13, 2016
Ibsen's Hedda has been called the female Hamlet and not just because it's a role that every serious actress wants to play. The blank at the heart of her presents a daunting challenge. Why is she so unhappy? Why is she, frankly, such a bitch? The text leaves much unanswered, and every director, every Hedda, must join the dots in their own way.
BWW Review: A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE is Bleak and Beautiful at the Kennedy Center
by Barbara Johnson
- Nov 23, 2016
The plot of A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE is straightforward, and the source material by Arthur Miller is pretty good, but the spectacular staging of this classic work at the Kennedy Center elevates what could have been a fairly pedestrian family drama to atmospheric heights. The very definition of 'catharsis', this spellbinding production stuns with stripped-down, potent emotion.

BWW Review: LAZARUS, King's Cross Theatre
by Marianka Swain
- Nov 8, 2016
Like David Bowie himself, this is a show that defies definition. It's both all and none of a musical, a play, a gig, performance art, philosophical meditation, a fever dream, a collective trip into the unknown. It's aesthetically ravishing, musically profound, and though inarguably weird and frequently indecipherable at times emotionally devastating.
