Due to popular demand, United Solo brings back Austin Pendleton to teach in the Master Class Series on May 31, 2018 at Theatre Row in New York City. This class provides participants with the opportunity to meet, work, and be discovered by one of the most influential theatre directors. Austin Pendleton will spend time working with the participants on scenes and monologues. He will offer his critique and thoughts on participants' work, gradually trying to reach a wider evaluation of the strengths and potential of each actor. Participants are expected to bring a scene from material they are currently working on. All ages and levels of theatrical experience encouraged. Space is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis. "Participants of the United Solo Master Class Series have an incredible opportunity to work in a collaborative setting with industry leaders in theatre, television, and film. National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $80 million in grants as part of the NEA's second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2018. Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $10,000 to 1st Stage for the 2nd Annual Logan Festival of Solo Performance. The Art Works category is the NEA's largest funding category and supports projects that focus on the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and/or the strengthening of communities through the arts.
The world's largest solo theatre festival announced its 2018 selections, which include over 120 productions from all over the world. These productions represent various forms of theatre, dance, and performance art, and will be presented at Theatre Row. The 42nd Street venue has been home for United Solo since 2010. This Master Class with Fiona Shaw is a rare opportunity to meet and work with one of the most influential actresses and directors of contemporary theatre. Participants are expected to prepare a short piece of text of their choice to work on, such as: an audition speech of any kind, a speech from a scene, a poem, any text (classical or contemporary), even their original writing, or - as recommended by Ms. Shaw herself - a compilation of things, which may include, for example: some sonnets mixed with contemporary writing, basically any text that is two-minutes or less in length.
