City Theater Company gets their Irish up for the 21st season, opening in December with a reimagined staging of James Joyce's The Dead. Richard Nelson won the Tony Award for Best Musical Book in 2000 for his adaptation of the short story that closes out Joyce's seminal collection The Dubliners. The music is by Shaun Davey, with lyrics conceived and adapted by Richard Nelson and Shaun Davey.

Playwrights Horizons today announced several major initiatives that will expand the ways in which theater writers are compensated. As a writer's theater dedicated to the support and development of contemporary American playwrights, composers and lyricists and to the production of their new work, Playwrights Horizons is committed to establishing new standards in compensation that will directly benefit all of its writers and taking a leadership position in responding to the reality that theater writers are among the lowest-compensated creative artists in America.

The 26th Annual Festival of New Musicals, presented by the National Alliance For Musical Theatre (NAMT), kicked off with THE 46TH MINUTE, a concert hosted by Lindsay Mendez and featuring performances by Heidi Blickenstaff, Doreen Montalvo, Mamie Parris, Bryce Ryness, and more. Musical presentations started October 23 at New World Stages (340 West 50th Street) and included Beautiful Poison, Cubamor, Great Wall, How To Break, Mary Marie, The Noteworthy Life of Howard Barnes, String and Stu For Silverton. Virginia Repertory Theatre announces the opening of the award-winning musical, Mame, at the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre, 114 West Broad Street on Friday, November 21 with a Preview on Thursday, November 20. The show runs through January 11, 2014.

Rehearsals begin tomorrow, Tuesday, October 21 for the Playwrights Horizons production of POCATELLO, the world premiere of a new play by Obie, Drama Desk and Lortel awards winner and 2014 MacArthur Foundation 'Genius' grantee Samuel D. Hunter (The Whale at PH, The Few, A Bright New Boise). Directed by Davis McCallum (The Whale at PH, The Few, London Wall, A Bright New Boise, Water by the Spoonful), the play will be the third production of the theater company's 2014/2015 Season.

The New York Times reports that Tony-winning NEXT TO NORMAL star Alice Ripley will lead A CHRISTMAS MEMORY in its off-Broadway premiere at Irish Rep, running November 25, 2014 to January 4, 2015. Charlotte Moore directs.

Philadelphia Theatre Company's continues its 40th Anniversary season with the Tony Award-nominated play Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanley November 28-December 28. Directed by Mary B. Robinson, the cast features Beth Dixon, David Howey, Anthony Lawton, and Kathleen McNenny.

Previews begin tomorrow, Friday, October 17 at 7:30 PM for the Playwrights Horizons' world premiere production of GRAND CONCOURSE, a new play by playwright and two-time Obie Award-winning actress Heidi Schreck (author of There Are No More Big Secrets, Creature, Showtime's 'Nurse Jackie'). Directed by Kip Fagan (The Revisionist, Asuncion), the play is the second production of the acclaimed theater company's 2014/2015 Season. Thirteenth Floor Dance Theater has announced the world premiere of A Wake, conceived and created by 13th Floor Founder and Artistic Director Jenny McAllister. A Wake, based on the novel Finnegans Wake, explores what James Joyce called 'the dark night of the soul,' a meditation on love, death and the inescapability of the past. This latest dance theater piece by McAllister combines Joyce's wild, idiosyncratic language with original dialogue and choreography by McAllister. A Wake opens in preview tonight, October 16, 2014 and runs for three nights, Friday through Sunday, October 17 - 19 at ODC Theater.

The Players Theatre Short Play and Musical Festival encourage playwrights to dig into their dark crevices by offering an annual horror-themed festival each October. Celebrating its 4th year, "Boo!" runs through October 26 for three weeks. Each week four original short plays, by four separate playwrights will be presented and a "Best of the Week" production will be selected by judge and audience vote.
