Eleanor of Aquitaine (1124-1204) ruled one of the wealthiest territories in England, was sought after by Lords and Kings alike, became Queen Consort of both France and England, and is considered one of the most powerful and wealthy women of her era, despite spending 16 years imprisoned by her second husband Henry II, from 1173-1189. Her intelligence, wisdom, wit, and powers of persuasion jump off the history pages and directly into the context of the modern feminist movement. As far as possible from a shrinking violet, Eleanor persevered for 80 years to outlive four kings: two husbands and two sons.
