Out of Africa Returns to South Main Arts District

In celebration of Black History Month, the fifth edition of the art exhibition, Out of Africa returns to Art Village Gallery and the South Main Arts District bringing contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora to the forefront.

HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME Announces Cast

Natural Talent Productions of St. Charles, Illinois has announced its cast and creative team for their February 2018 production of Disney's THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, featuring music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Peter Parnell, follows deformed Quasimodo on his journey to find acceptance and community, set in 15th century France. The work is based on the Victor Hugo novel of the same title and includes songs from the Disney animated film as well as newly added music.

Photo Flash: ONE DROP Brings to Life the Struggles of the Civil War

'One Drop,' a family drama with music by Andrea J. Fulton, brings to life the politics of a young mixed-race man's 'passing' for white in post-Civil War Louisiana, illustrating the risks taken by those not afraid to love despite bigotry. The piece, inspired by the playwright's actual family history, tells the story of a family torn apart by racism but ultimately reunited. It debuted in Theater for the New City's Dream Up Festival in 2010. TNC will present a revival of the play, directed by Sabura Rashid, from February 1 to 18 in honor of Black History Month.

Review Roundup: QUEENS GIRL IN AFRICA at Mosaic Theater

Mosaic Theater presents Caleen Sinnette Jennings' QUEENS GIRL IN AFRICA, the sequel to her 2015 QUEENS GIRL IN THE WORLD. Set in the 1960s, this one-woman show tells the story of a young Jacqueline Marie Butler, who travels to Nigeria after Malcom X is assassinated. QUEENS GIRL IN AFRICA opened January 8th and runs through February 4th.

Northlight Presents SKELETON CREW

Northlight Theatre, under the direction of Artistic Director BJ Jones and Executive Director Timothy J. Evans, continues its 2017-18 season with Skeleton Crew, written by Dominique Morisseau and directed by Ron OJ Parson. Skeleton Crew runs January 25 March 3, 2018 at Northlight Theatre, 9501 Skokie Blvd in Skokie. The press opening is Friday, February 2, 2018 at 8pm.

Arthur Miller's ALL MY SONS Comes to Court Theatre

Court Theatre, under the continuing leadership of Charles Newell, Marilyn F. Vitale Artistic Director, and Stephen Albert, Executive Director, continues its 2017/18 season with All My Sons by Arthur Miller, directed by Charles Newell and featuring Kate Collins, John Judd and Timothy Edward Kane. All My Sons runs January 11 February 11, 2018 at Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis Ave. The press opening is Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 8:00 p.m.

Arena Stage Announces New Playwrights to Join Power Plays Initiative

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater announces four additional commissioned playwrights as a part of Power Plays, an ambitious initiative commissioning and developing 25 new plays and musicals from 25 writers over the course of 10 years. Playwrights Kenneth Lin, Craig Lucas, Eduardo Machadoand Theresa Rebeck join previously announced commissioned playwrights with projects underway, including Nathan Alan Davis, Eve Ensler, Aaron Posner, Sarah Ruhl and John Strand.

Jon Patrick Walker Stars In Alarm Will Sound's Production '1969'

UCLA's Center for the Art of Performance (CAP UCLA) presents the West Coast premiere of contemporary music ensemble Alarm Will Sound's multimedia musical event 1969, about a fabled meeting between avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and iconoclastic Beatle John Lennon, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Royce Hall. Tickets for $29 $59 are now available online at cap.ucla.edu, via Ticketmaster, by phone 310-825-2101 and at the UCLA Central Ticket Office.

Hosted by Meg Wolitzer (The Interestings). Beginning at 6pm, the evening includes a rare NYC appearance by Blume herself.

The Kennedy Center presents Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, 2/6

Famed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater marks its annual Kennedy Center engagement, February 6 11, with seven magnetic performances on the Opera House stage. Led by Artistic Director Robert Battle, the company's performances include two D.C. debuts, three new productions, and a total of 10 works by a range of diverse choreographers. Alvin Ailey's American masterpiece Revelations will be performed as the finale for all seven programs.

Review: BUGABOO AND THE SILENT ONE Offers an Intimate Look at the Power of Female Friendship Despite Devastating Circumstances

Fans of Orange is the New Black certainly enjoy watching the escapades of female inmates stuck together in prison as they attempt to understand each other and either try to get along or attempt to dominate each other. Marja-Lewis Ryan's fourth original production at The Lounge, entitled BUGABOO & THE SILENT ONE, centers on just such a tale based in the women's block of Henderson County Jail in West Virginia in the present day, centered around two female inmates faced with life in prison. Presented by producer Chris Bender (American Pie, History of Violence, Mulan), Marja-Lewis Ryan's timely new drama is an intimate look at the power of female friendship despite devastating circumstances.
