Based in Israel, Roy Assaf Dance makes its U.S. debut with a program of clever and heartfelt works in the Doris Duke Theatre July 12-16. A rising choreographic star, Assaf has been commissioned by companies across the globe including Batsheva Dance Company, The Royal Swedish Ballet, National Dance Company Wales, and LA Dance Project. Facing an August 31st deadline to identify a new home, Nimbus Dance Works announces that the organization, one of Jersey City's largest professional arts non-profits, and a leading dance organization statewide, will relocate to 165 Newark Avenue for the 2017-18 season, adjacent to the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza. With two dance studios, office and storage space, Nimbus' new location will house the professional company and Nimbus2 (second company), the School of Nimbus Dance Works, the NimbusPresents performance series, and company offices from which Nimbus administers dance education programs throughout the Jersey City school system. Nimbus has announced a campaign to raise funds and for in-kind items to support the move to the new location.

Abhinaya Dance Company of San Jose will perform on Friday, May 26th at the SF International Arts Festival, presenting Sanchaari - Elaboration in the South Indian classical dance style, Bharatanatyam. The traditional framework of the 2000 year old classical Bharatanatyam dance has engendered many interpretations through its renaissance period of the early 20th century to the present time. 'Sanchaari Bhava', is a term that denotes the embellishment of the literal meaning of texts through the individual dancer's imagination, skill, and experience. This production takes the audience on a journey through traditional solo dance pieces performed by dancers in the temples prior to the 20th century to the varied faces of contemporary Bharatanatyam.

LEAH, THE FORSAKEN is a tale of forbidden love, treachery, and redemption from 1862. Leah, a Jewish refugee fleeing persecution in Hungary, is forbidden by law to pass the night in an Austrian town. But there she wins the love of Rudolf, a Christian citizen. When a particularly zealous persecutor convinces Rudolf she has betrayed him, he quickly renounces her. Leah retreats to her exile, but only after bestowing her and her people's curse on him and his progeny. Can there be any light in such a darkened time, and what could possibly light it?
