SFCM New Music Ensemble Celebrates Lou Harrison

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) joins the Bay Area's celebration of Lou Harrison's centennial with a birthday concert presented by the SFCM New Music Ensemble, conducted by Nicole Paiement. This performance features important works by Harrison, whose style is known for incorporating non-Western traditions, relating to his activism, and showcasing a world of non-traditional techniques and sounds. 

SFCM Opera Double Bill Features Works by Massenet & Puccini

SFCM presents a double bill of two one-act operas by romantic-era masters, Massenet's Le portrait de Manon and Puccini's Suor Angelica -- one, a story of love and determination, and the other, a tale of secrets from within a Florentine convent.

Mannes School To Celebrate Centennial At Carnegie Hall, 4/25

Boston Lyric Opera Announces 2017/18 Season - Elena Stikhina in TOSCA, World Premiere of THE NEFARIOUS and More!

Boston Lyric Opera's Stanford Calderwood General & Artistic Director Esther Nelson announced today an eclectic 2017/18 Season designed to please die-hard opera fans as well as newcomers to the art form.  Each of the Company's productions will be presented on a different area stage, starting October 13-22, 2017 with a new production of Giacomo Puccini's Tosca featuring the American debut of award-winning rising global star Elena Stikhina in the title role. The World Premiere of The Nefarious, Immoral but Highly Profitable Enterprise of Mr. Burke & Mr. Hare (a.k.a. Burke & Hare) by composer Julian Grant and librettist Mark Campbell follows November 8-12, 2017.  From March 16-25, 2018, BLO presents Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's pivotal early-20th century work The Threepenny Opera.  BLO closes its Season in May with Leonard Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti, paired with his Arias and Barcarolles, to mark the Lawrence, Mass.-born composer's centennial.

Chamber Orchestra of NY Returns to Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall

The Chamber Orchestra of New York, Salvatore Di Vittorio, Music Director and Conductor, will be in concert today, March 9 at 7:30 pm, performing Chamber Orchestra of New York Presents Dvorak's Serenade, Bach, and Vivaldi's Seasons with Oliveira International Violin Competition-winning violinist Sirena Huang, the second concert of their 2016-2017 Masterworks series at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, 154 West 57th Street in Manhattan.

San Francisco Conservatory of Music Appoints Kay Stern To Faculty

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) today announces the appointment of violinist Kay Stern to its faculty. Stern is currently the concertmaster of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra, a position she has held since 1994. She will begin her own studio at SFCM in Fall 2017, in addition to continuing her role at San Francisco Opera.

Cellist Inbal Sege Opens First Night of Roulette's String Theory Festival, March 29

Israeli-American cellist Inbal Segev, known for her "warm, pure and beautiful tone" (Strings Magazine), will open The Music of Anna Clyne, a concert marking the first night of Roulette's (509 Atlantic Ave) third annual String Theory Festival. Segev will perform Grammy-nominated composer Anna Clyne's Rest These Hands for solo cello. The concert also includes performances of Clyne's music by The String Orchestra of Brooklyn and Mivos Quartet.

DRUMLINE LIVE Parades into the Capitol Center for the Arts Today

DRUMLine Live, the show-stopping attraction created by the musical team behind 20th Century Fox's hit movies "Drumline" and "Drumline: A New Beat," parades onto the Capitol Center for the Arts mainstage on Today, March 7 at 7:30PM. The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) today announces the appointment of guitarist Judicael Perroy to its faculty. Perroy comes to SFCM from France, where he has taught at the National Academy of Aulnay-sous-Bois and at the Pole d'Enseignement Superieur de la Musique en Seine-Saint-Denis-Île-de-France, among other institutions.

National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine Comes Harris Center, 3/19

Music Institute of Chicago Hosts Gala to Celebrate Violinist Rachel Barton Pine, 5/15

The Music Institute of Chicago hosts its annual gala Monday, May 15 at the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago, 120 East Delaware Place. The oldest community music school in Illinois and one of the three largest community music schools in the nation, the Music Institute is planning a celebratory evening highlighted by the presentation of the Dushkin Award to acclaimed violinist Rachel Barton Pine.

Sirena Huang First Prize Winner of Inaugural Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition

Sirena Huang (age 22 from the United States) has been named the First Prize Winner of the inaugural Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition. As first prize winner, Sirena Huang, receives a cash prize of $30,000 as well as a new violin, crafted by celebrated violin makers Feng Jiang, Jeffrey Phillips, Andrew Ryan and John Young; a Silver-mounted bow from Eric Lane; a coveted Musafia Case donated by Reuning and Son Violins, Inc.; a signed copy of "The American Violin" provided by Tucker Densley, Christopher Germain, Philip J. Kass, Darcy Kuronen, John Montgomery and P. Dameron Midgett, IV; and a $250 gift certificate given by International Violin Company. Additionally, the first prize winner will receive public relations and artist management support, with future performances with the following orchestras and festivals: Atlantic Classical Orchestra, Fort Pierce, FL; Bach, Beethoven and Brahms Society, Brookline, MA; Brevard Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne, FL; Music in the Mountains, Durango, CO; and Newport Music Festival, Newport, RI, among others
