One of the neat things about writing a column for Broadway World is that you get a chance to interview some folks whose work you've been enjoying and admiring for many years. One of today's subjects first came on my radar way back in 1980 with the Broadway revival of West Side Story. Debbie Allen played Anita in that production and her Her performance deservedly garnered her a Tony Award nomination and a Drama Desk Award. A few years later she wowed me again playing the lead role in Sweet Charity, which resulted in yet another Tony Award nomination.

Last evening, the Palace Theater (Waterbury, CT) hosted the eighth annual Connecticut High School Musical Theater Awards, a black tie gala event that celebrates the arts and recognizes individual artistry in vocal, dance and acting performances as exhibited by Connecticut high school students. 20 schools from across the state came together to celebrate the achievement, craft and talents that make high-quality, musical theater education happen.

This year, 20 schools from across the state will come together to celebrate the achievement, craft and talents that make high-quality, musical theater education happen. Students, teachers, families, and Broadway performers will gather for this one night event to present the awards. Presenters include Julian Decker (Les Miserables, Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame) Samantha Pollino (Hot Feet) Kimber Sprawl (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) Connor Deane (Broadway Method Academy) and many more. The gala will be hosted by Broadway veteran, Arbender Robinson (Shuffle Along, Les Miserables, Beautiful, Ragtime, Book of Mormon). Broadway Method Academy (Fairfield, CT) is a proud sponsor of the Connecticut High School Musical Theater Awards and will award two full scholarships to Best Actor and Best Actress in a Musical.
As BroadwayWorld reported yesterday, Doris Roberts, best known for her Emmy-winning role on the sitcom EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND, passed away Sunday, April 17, in Los Angeles. She was 90 years old.
