Schimmel Center To Present Anna Deavere Smith In Notes From The Field, 6/1 & 6/2

Schimmel Center will present Tony and Pulitzer Prize nominee Anna Deavere Smith's Obie Award-winning solo performance, Notes From the Field, for one weekend only on Friday, June 1 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, June 2 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in preparation for a two week run at the Royal Court in London. The production is directed by Leonard Foglia and features original music composed and performed by bassist Marcus Shelby who joins Ms. Smith on stage.

International Jazz Day 2018 came to a phenomenal close this evening in St. Petersburg, following an extraordinary All-Star Global Concert at the historic Mariinsky Theatre that capped off several days of educational outreach programs across the city. The concert, led by artistic co-directors Herbie Hancock (USA) and Igor Butman (Russia), was streamed live by the United Nations and UNESCO and on www.jazzday.com. It featured performances by an international roster of artists including Oleg Akkuratov (Russia), Till Brnner (Germany), Oleg Butman (Russia), Terri Lyne Carrington (USA), Joey DeFrancesco (USA), Fatoumata Diawara (Mali), Vadim Eilenkrig (Russia), Kurt Elling (USA),Antonio Fara (Italy), James Genus (USA), Robert Glasper (USA), David Goloschekin (Russia), Hassan Hakmoun (Morocco),Gilad Hekselman (Israel), Horacio Hernandez (Cuba), Taku Hirano (Japan), Anatoly Kroll (Russia), Gaoyang Li (China), Rudresh Mahanthappa (USA), The Manhattan Transfer (USA), Branford Marsalis (USA), James Morrison (Australia), Moscow Jazz Orchestra (Russia), Makoto Ozone (Japan), Danilo Prez (Panama), Dianne Reeves (USA), Lee Ritenour (USA), Luciana Souza (Brazil) and Ben Williams (USA). John Beasley (USA) served as musical director.

Hawaii Student Makes History At Poetry Out Loud National Finals

High school students from across the nation competed in the national finals of the 13th Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest in Washington D.C. Returning Hawaii State champion, Nicholas Amador (12th grade), of Punahou School placed 2nd in the national finals and was awarded $10,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts. Nicholas represented the state at the national finals in Washington, DC and took 3rd place in 2016 and 2nd place in 2017. He is the only student to ever place in the top three more than once at the national finals.  Nicholas performed: Snow Day by Billy Collins, Two Guitars by Victor Hernandez Cruz, and The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus.

Hailed for its 'compelling and innovative programming (WQXR Radio)," dell'Arte Opera Ensemble today announced its 2018 summer festival dedicated to works by Mozart and Salieri. Oxygen Media, the network for high-quality crime programming, is ordering new seasons of “Cold Justice” and “Criminal Confessions” from Executive Producer Dick Wolf, it was announced today by Rod Aissa, Executive Vice President, Original Programming and Development, Oxygen Media. Both series are in pre-production and are set to return in 2018. This announcement comes on the heels of the network expanding its original series slate with 10 new greenlights and the US premiere of a Piers Morgan event series.
