Scottsdale Musical Theater Company presents the return of their original, world-premiere musical, That Irving Berlin Thing - a two-act revue featuring over 40 of the legend's most notable - and rarely-heard - songs.

Scottsdale Musical Theater Company announces the headliners for their July 2018 production of the classic musical 42nd Street (July 6 - 15, 2018). Charles Shaughnessy (TV's The Nanny , Days of Our Lives , Broadway's Urinetown) portray director Julian Marsh. He will be joined by 3-time Grammy Award-winning recording icon Debby Boone (#1 hit You Light Up My Life , Broadway's 7 Brides for 7 Brothers) as diva Dorothy Brock and rising Broadway star Eloise Kropp (Dames at Sea, On the Town, Cats) as Anytime Annie. Ms. Kropp will also create the show's tap choreography.

David Hock, Scottsdale Musical Theater Company's founder and executive producer, struck it rich when he snagged two prominent theatre veterans, Bronson Pinchot and Kaitlin Hopkins, to co-star in ANNIE THE MUSICAL (on stage now at the Tempe Center for the Arts through January 7th.) He appears as well to have made a novel if not daring choice in the interpretation of their characters. The result is a light-hearted, easygoing and amusing production but one without the essential shadows, tensions, and chemistry that commonly stir one's emotions, seize the heart, and make for a memorable experience.

Disney Channel and Broadway star Anneliese Van der Pol ( That's So Raven , Raven's Home , Broadway's Beauty and the Beast and the original cast of Vanities) will replace Heather Morris as Lily St. Regis in SMTC's upcoming production of Annie January 3 - 7, 2018. Morris had to back out of the production due to changes in the shooting schedule of an upcoming film project she's involved with.

With its array of accolades ~ novel, film, and musical ~ and the richness of its themes and content, KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN is a treasure trove of possibility, to be mined deeply and imaginatively for its allusions to the mythology of the spider woman, cinema, and revolution. On these varied accounts, Scottsdale Musical Theater Company's current stab at the KISS falls short. The multi-talented Hector Coris directs this ambitious production, but I fear that limited resources have roadblocked him from realizing the production's full potential.

  Scottsdale Musical Theater Company presents the rarely-seen Tony Award-winning musical Kiss of the Spider Woman. Set in an unnamed Latin American prison, a revolutionary is thrown into a cell with a flamboyant window-dresser. While the window-dresser escapes into Hollywood fantasies featuring the dangerous and seductive Aurora, the rebel desperately tries to find a way to continue his part in the revolution. The Tony Award-winning musical is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Manuel Puig.

Now in its sixth year, Scottsdale Musical Theater Company is pleased to announce its upcoming productions at their home at Tempe Center for the Arts for 2016-2017. They've also donated hundreds of tickets through VetTix - a program that offers free tickets to events to veterans and their families through a lottery system - more than any other theatre company in the Valley. This week, Mark Nadler made his solo television debut on WNET (New York/13) and WLIW (Long Island/21) in the latest installment of the new Public Television series 66th & Broadway (photo below). My friends, in the contemporary cabaret world, this is a BIG DEAL. Let's face it: When 100 people show up to a show on the same night it is an event, so the possibility of thousands (or--dare we dream--millions) of people watching Mr. Nadler perform in the comfort of their homes is beyond exciting. It is Cabaret Nirvana, Shangri-La, and Xanadu combined, the kind of exposure a cabaret artist dreams about but rarely receives.
