Well it may have been hotter than blazes this past weekend but I managed to spend the weekend inside at one of my favorite events of the year, The Village Theatre Village Originals Festival of New Musicals. They presented concert stagings of five musicals still in the works. It's a great opportunity for the authors to get to see their shows in front of an audience and for us to get a sneak peak at amazing musical theater to come. Now as they are still being workshopped I can't really review any of them but I can tell you what I saw.
Village Theatre kicks off its 16th Annual Festival of New Musicals with COST OF LIVING BY Timothy Huang, taking place in Issaquah on August 12-14, 2016. Tisa Chang, Artistic Producing Director of PAN ASIAN REPERTORY THEATRE, announces for its 39thseason a special limited run of NO-NO BOY by Ken Narasaki, directed by Ron Nakahara, and based on the groundbreaking novel by John Okada. Set in the aftermath of WWII as Japanese Americans return to the West Coast and called "eloquent…elegant and searing" by LA Weekly, NO-NO BOY will run from June 18-19 at the Burke Theatre in Washington, DC (701 Pennsylvania Ave.); June 21-25, 2016 at the Studio Theatre at Theatre Row in New York City (410 W. 42nd Street); and June 26 at Flushing Town Hall in Flushing, NY. Official opening in Washington DC will be June 18 at 7:00pm and in New York on June 21 at 7:30pm.
The Bingham Camp Theatre Retreat (BCTR) will be presenting a private industry reading of "Call It Courage" a new musical based in the novel by Armstrong Sperry. Book, Music & Lyrics by Adam Overett. The presentation will be directed by BCTR founder Devanand Janki and will take place March 17th & 18th in New York at The Stella Adler Studio of Acting.
