The Broadway at Birdland concert series celebrated a musical trifecta on Monday night, with sublime jazz vocalist Jane Monheit, extraordinary arrangements by Mary Ann McSweeney, and a wealth of Irving Berlin material. The stellar backup band for the evening evening included McSweeney on bass, Jim Ridl on piano, and Alvester Garnett on drums. Several months ago, the Monheit-McSweeney duo teamed up with a swinging take on Cole Porter's iconic score for Anything Goes, to great acclaim.
On June 2nd, cast members of A Broadway Smile's inaugural charity gala We'll Take Manhattan coming to New World Stages June 10th took the stage at Jim Caruso's Cast Party at Birdland to much ovation. After a sold-out run at the Canal Room, 'The TRL Generation' brought its wildly successful 'Broadway Loves the Spice Girls' concert uptown to 54 Below on January 13th. The 'Girl Power'-filled song and dance extravaganza was musically directed by Benjamin Rauhala, directed by Kyle Fox, and produced by Shoshana Feinstein. Broadway Producer Ken Davenport and Davenport Theatrical presented the first annual Davenport Songwriting Contest! 10 songs competed for the title of 'Best Song' and a $500 Grand Prize. Fresh from her solo cabaret engagement at 54 Below, Broadway starlet Ariana DeBose (Motown, Bring It On) has joined the previously announced line-up for the upcoming return of Charlie Rosen's Broadway Big Band. This marks DeBose's third guest appearance with the ensemble. DeBose will perform material she has never sung with the Rosen's Big Band before.
