BWW Review: ART, Old Vic

Opening the Old Vic's 2016-17 season, and following on from the Glenda Jackson-led King Lear, 'Art' is a new translation of Yasmina Reza's French play that celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. It is a comedy of friendship that brings Rufus Sewell, Tim Key and Paul Ritter back to the London stage, and reunites the original production's creative team.

Book Review: BRUTUS AND OTHER HEROINES by Harriet Walter

One of the big theatre stories of 2016 is women reclaiming Shakespeare, from Gillian Bevan's Cymbeline and Michelle Terry's Henry V to Glenda Jackson's Lear and Phyllida Lloyd's landmark all-female trilogy starring Harriet Walter.

BWW Review: KING LEAR, Old Vic, 7 November 2016

Gender-blind casting has arrived and we'd better get used to it. Correction: it seems we are getting used to it, viz the imminent revival of the Donmar's all-female Shakespeare trilogy. So the headline story of this Old Vic production is not that a woman is taking on the Everest north-face of a role formerly reserved for mature alpha males of the acting profession. The headline story of Glenda Jackson's Lear is that this Lear is magnificent, and its magnificence emanates directly from the text.

BWW Review: THE SHAKESPEARE REVUE, Richmond Theatre, 7 November 2016

A revue is a rare theatrical treat these days. In its heyday, the irresistible combination of light comedy, song and dance sketches was incredibly popular. Its golden age lasted from the early 1920s to the late 1950s and for much of that time its greatest practitioner was Noel Coward who wrote and appeared in a succession of revues on both sides of the Atlantic such as London Calling! (1923) and Sigh No More (1945).

BWW Review: CYMBELINE, Barbican, 3 November 2016

Over the next six years, the RSC aims to produce every single Shakespeare play. Its 2016 season features Cymbeline, one of the lesser known but not lesser performed plays; this production is a transfer from Stratford-Upon-Avon, and there have been two productions at Shakespeare's Globe this year alone. Why the sudden revival? A fool boasts 'Britain is a world by itself' (and no, I don't mean Nigel Farage). In a post-Brexit Britain, these words ring truer than ever before in this bold production, which ironically seems to be lacking a sense of unity and cohesion too.
