Seattle Opera Announces New Season - New Productions, World Premiere & More!

It's a new era at Seattle Opera. The company today announced its 2015/16 season, the first to be presented by General Director Aidan Lang, and a return to full-year programming with a total of six operas, including new productions and a world premiere. Under Lang's leadership, the company hopes to serve the community through the magic of theater and music in McCaw Hall, and in learning and engagement programs across the Pacific Northwest.

Renee Fleming will add a new role to her extensive repertory when she sings her first-ever performances of Hanna Glawari, the title role in Lehar's The Merry Widow, at the Met this season. Four-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman makes her Met debut as director and choreographer of a new production of the comic operetta, in which a wealthy widow's countrymen launch a romantic plot to keep her -- and her tax dollars -- within their borders.

San Antonio Symphony Announces 2015 Strauss Festival Lineup; Runs 1/4-2/22

The San Antonio Symphony along with numerous festival partners is poised to begin its fifth annual city-wide winter composer festival, this year focusing on the late-Romantic German composer Richard Strauss. Opening in January, the Festival features a wealth of music by Strauss, including a collaboration with OPERA San Antonio for an undertaking of his epic opera Salome.

New Year's Eve will be celebrated in high style on ?medici.tv with a free webcast of superstar soprano Anna Netrebko and tenor Juan Diego Flórez in Emmerich Kálmán's operetta Die Csárdásfürstin (“The Gypsy Princess”), with the Staatskapelle Dresden under Christian Thielemann. Filmed live on December 28 and then webcast by medici.tv the next day, the performance will be available for free viewing up to 90 days afterward.

Polish Conductor, Jerzy Semkow, Dies at Age 86

Polish conductor, Jerzy Semkow has died today, December 23, 2014, near Lausanne, Switzerland. He has served as music director of the Saint Louis Symphony, principal conductor of the Royal Danish Opera and the Royal Danish Orchestra in Copenhagen, Music Advisor and Principal Conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic, Music Director of the Orchestra of Radio-Televisione Italiana (RAI) in Rome, and Artistic Director of the National Opera in Warsaw.

Richmond Symphony Orchestra to Perform STRAVINSKY: PULCINELLA SUITE, 1/11

More Between Heaven and Earth, Salon/Sanctuary's original site-specific music theater piece, directed and with a script by Erica Gould based on the letters of Thomas Jefferson and Maria Cosway, returns to Fraunces Tavern on January 18th. Fraunces Tavern, built in 1719, sets the stage for the production, which features music prepared from the original 18th century manuscripts, researched by Jessica Gould.

The Met's English-Language HANSEL AND GRETEL Opens Tonight

Continuing a tradition inaugurated in 2006, the Met will offer a holiday presentation this December and January: an English-language performance of an opera, with special weekday matinees and discount pricing designed to make the Met affordable for families with children. This year's production, Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, opens tonight, December 18.

Festival d'Aix-en-Provence's 67th Season to Feature World Premieres, French Premieres & More

The 67th season of the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, under the leadership of General Manager Bernard Foccroulle, will present the world premiere productions of operas by Handel and Mozart; the French premiere of Jonathan Dove's children's opera The Monster in the Maze led by Sir Simon Rattle with the London Symphony Orchestra; and a revival of director Robert Carsen's acclaimed 1991 Festival production of Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The Festival's major vocal presentations this season will also include Serbian composer Ana Sokolovi?'s unconventional one-act a capella opera Svadba (Marriage), and a double bill presenting Persephone,Stravinsky's melodrama for tenor, female narrator, choir, children's choir, dancers and orchestra, with Tchaikovsky's last opera, Iolanta.
