Brand new and completely unique to Cincinnati was the decision to have the ballet open in the Kitchen. I found the scene to be inventive and whimsical and the focus on the food made the intrusion of the mice more practical during Clara's dream. I loved that the big blue cake made during the opening scene and used during the party served as the scenic backdrop in the Sugar Plum Fairy's kingdom. This larger than life cake also served as an entrance for the different acts which left the audience with plenty of mystery as they wondered how the dancers were appearing and disappearing on and off the stage. Also unique this year was the inclusion of Frisch's Big Boy during the battle scene, which was of course included for the ballet's opening night performance as this year marked Frisch's 40th year of sponsorship for the Nutcracker. This was my first year seeing Cincinnati's version of this Christmas classic and I can't wait to see what they have in store for us next year.

After the 1954 New York City Ballet premiere of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker, the production reigned supreme as the gold standard for the holiday classic even though William Christensen's excellent 1944 version was the first one ever staged in this country. By now, however, countless superb iterations of the ballet have spawned from coast to coast as well as in Alaska and Hawaii. Many of them, in my opinion, are better than Mr. B's. That may be why the matinee I saw on December 27th 2014 at the Koch Theater in Lincoln Center seemed like an obligatory musty relic that had been dragged out of the attic for yet another season.

The essential holiday tradition of The Nutcracker ballet continues for one more weekend, presented by the Los Angeles Ballet at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday, December 27 at 1:00pm and 5:00pm and on Sunday, December 28 at 2:00pm. This production is the perfect introduction to classic ballet for the whole family as there are many children of all ages in the cast. And given the number of touring companies bringing productions to Los Angeles, it's nice to be able to support a hometown ballet company where many of the featured dancers were born and/or live in our area.
