It was announced today that Lynne Meadow, Artistic Director of Manhattan Theatre Club, will be honored with the Lucille Lortel Award for Lifetime Achievement. The award recognizes Meadow's extraordinary accomplishments and dedication to producing and directing new work Off-Broadway for over three decades. The great American composers, lyricists, and librettists featured in 2010-11 are Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Jerome Kern, George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, John Kander and Fred Ebb, George S. Kaufman, Stephen Sondheim and more.
Pittsburgh Public Theater Producing Artistic Director Ted Pappas, who is currently celebrating his 10th year as the company's leader, today announced the line-up of plays for 2010/2011. Kaufman (coauthor of The Man Who Came to Dinner, You Can't Take It with You, and other hit comedies) brought high comedy and laughter to American audiences in the 1930s with their witty, stylish hits Stage Door, The Royal Family, and Dinner at Eight. Stage Door was a huge Broadway success in 1936 at the Music Box Theatre (staged by Kaufman) and was made into a star-studded Hollywood movie featuring a young Katherine Hepburn. The play, however, is rarely done in modern times because of the large cast. A magnificent vehicle for theatre actresses, Stage Door is the kind of seldom-produced classic comedy that The American Century Theater was created to produce-and will be presenting in April of 2011.

The Cold War turns hot in Cole Porter's final Broadway musical SILK STOCKINGS, a sly and sophisticated musical version of the classic film Ninotchka, to be presented by 42nd Street Moon. Low-priced previews run May 4, 5 and 6, with the opening on Saturday May 7. The show will run through May 22 at the Eureka Theatre.

Artistic Director Jenny Gersten announced today the Main Stage line-up for the 2011 Williamstown Theatre Festival (WTF), the company's 57th season and the first under Ms. Gersten's leadership.
The biggest Broadway event of 1937 was undoubtedly the gala opening night of I'd Rather Be Right. Not only did the new musical boast a score by Richard Rodger and Lorenz Hart and a book by George S. Kaufman (who also directed) and Moss Hart (the pair had just won that year's Pulitzer for You Can't Take It With You), but the star was no less than the grand old man of Broadway - who many will argue invented the book song and dance musical comedy as we know it today - George M. Cohan, playing the role of then-President of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Never before and never since has a sitting U.S. president been the leading character in a Broadway musical.
