Every season, Diamond Head Theatre (DHT)---known as the 'Broadway of the Pacific'---mounts a Christmas-themed production to bring holiday cheer to the patrons of its theatre-going community. Supported by a stellar cast, choreography, costuming, and set, Holiday Inn is surely a musical to check in to.

Two of Broadway's most endearing leading ladies-Andrea McArdle and Donna McKechnie-celebrate two of America's most beloved musical theatre composers-Stephen Sondheim and Marvin Hamlisch-at Feinstein's at the Nikko on Friday, January 18 (8 p.m.) and Saturday, January 19 (8 p.m.).

Charley, a new musical comedy by producer Pretpakhuis, opens its' show in an old-fashioned but lovely manner. Two well-dressed men (Jonathan Demoor as Anton and Job Bovelander as Lodewijk)in front of the curtain, introducing in song their friend Charley, the title role played by master of physical comedy Jon van Eerd.The duo Anton and Lodewijk are leading the story throughout the show and their hysterical chemistry is lovely to watch

Irving Berlin's Holiday Inn is dazzling audiences at Paper Mill Playhouse. Recently seen on Broadway, this brilliant musical has a book by Gordon Greenberg and Chad Hodge. The production enjoys superb direction by Mr. Greenberg, inspired choreographies by Denis Jones, vibrant musical direction by Shawn Gough, and the talents of a stellar cast.

As a kid, I remember watching White Christmas (1954) every year with my family. When I got a little older I came across Holiday Inn, the 1941 precursor that also starred Bing Crosby, but paired with Fred Astaire, and introducing the song 'White Christmas'. There was a widely held opinion among some of my friends that it was the superior movie, an attitude that remained as long as we were only watching the edited version on commercial television. Because you see, they always cut the Blackface number. Once you see it, all innocence about this movie is lost. It forever tarnishes a film that contains two of Fred Astaire's most innovative numbers: the firecracker dance, and the drunken New Year's Eve tango that is a masterpiece of comic movement. Even for the time this number, egregiously inserted for the Lincoln's Birthday sequence (yes, it was once a holiday), seems shocking and offensive.
