Award-Winning LA RAZON BLINDADA Comes to 24th Street Theatre

La Razon Blindada ("Armored Reason") -This sublimely witty and provocative play, written and directed by Argentine playwright Aristides Vargas, was triply inspired by the classic novel "El Quixote" by Cervantes, "The Truth About Sancho Panza" by Franz Kafka, and testimonies from Chicho Vargas and other political prisoners held in Rawson Prison during Argentina's "Dirty War" of the 1970s. Jesus Castaños Chima and Tony Duran reprise their roles as political prisoners who are allowed to interact with one another for one hour a week - but must remain in their chairs and never stand.

Theaturtle and Threshold with Richard Jordan Productions in Association with The Pleasance presents KAFKA AND SON

At the age of 36 Franz Kafka was still living at home, a petty bureaucrat, a failed artist, a timid Jewish son.  Ruling and ruining his life was his overbearing father Hermann.  What to do?  Kafka wrote a 50 page letter to his father in which he reveals deep connections between his life and his fiction.  Adapted from this monumental letter, Kafka and Son is a blistering, often hilarious dissection of domestic authority and a revelatory visit with one of the architects of the modern psyche.

BWW Review: Two Icons Meet in OTSL's THE TRIAL

The American premiere of The Trial has opened at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. This is a very major event in opera. Franz Kafka's nightmare tale of Joseph K, trapped in an enigmatic trial for his life, has fascinated readers since it appeared in 1925. Composer Philip Glass read the novel as a youth and even then he yearned to write an opera based on it. But Glass kept that idea 'in his pocket' for sixty years. It was not until he received a commission from the Music Theatre Wales, the Royal Opera, Theatre Magdeburg and the Scottish Opera that Glass was able to fulfill that dream. The London premiere of The Trial opened in 2014.

Mad Cat Continues Season with Vaclav Havel's Subversive AUDIENCE and PROTEST

Mad Cat continues its 17th season with a production of two of Vaclav Havel's sharp political dramas AUDIENCE and PROTEST. The subversive Czechoslovakian playwright, Prime Minister & President, Vaclav Havel was a in danger of being declared a 'social parasite' by the neo-Stalinist regime of Gustav Husak when he wrote AUDIENCE & PROTEST back in 1975 & 1978. His plays had been banned and, in the time of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic of 1974, writers faced imprisonment if they did not have a stamp in the employment box of their Citizen Identification passport. Havel solved this problem by finding a job as a brewery hand. Havel rolled barrels in the basement of a regional brewery in Trutnov and the experience profoundly changed his writing. His work in the brewery suddenly gave him back the refreshing existential perspective 'from below, from where the absurd and grotesque dimensions of the world are always more plainly visible.' And then an incident occurred on the job that gave him the inspirational seed for what is his best loved, and arguably finest, play, AUDIENCE. Havel claimed the piece was written quickly and easily 'from the hip,' opening up a new way of working in the theater for Havel - writing his first autobiographical play.
