Both Engaged and A Woman of No Importance have been delighting preview audiences in advance of their openings this weekend. Having already extended both productions earlier this year, the Shaw Festival continues to respond to audience demand by adding another seven performances to the 2016 season. Also, a new block of tickets for the sell-out of the 2016 season The Dance of Death is now on sale.
A Woman of No Importance, Oscar Wilde's stylish comedy that exposes the cynicism and hypocrisy that underlies high "society", begins previews Sunday, May 29 at the Festival Theatre. This dangerous drama, directed by Eda Holmes, is the fourth major Wilde play to be presented under Artistic Director Jackie Maxwell's tenure - completing Wilde's brilliant, scalpel-like study of the world around him.
David Mirvish has announced today the 14 shows in the 2016 - 2017 Mirvish Theatre Season. There will be seven shows in the Mainstage Subscription Series, three in the Off-Mirvish Subscription Series, and four bonus shows not on subscription.
"In her final year as Artistic Director, Jackie has programmed a season that showcases the diversity and strength of work created here at the Shaw Festival and our patrons have responded enthusiastically," said Tim Jennings, Executive Director of the Shaw Festival. Christopher Durang's Tony Award winning play, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, opened last night at the Panasonic Theatre. The play's premise is reminiscent of a sitcom: Masha, a famous actress past her prime (and the most successful sibling) returns home for a weekend to visit her siblings Sonia and Vanya. Sonia and Vanya have spent the last 15 years caring for their aging parents who have since passed away. Sonia is especially jealous of the success Masha has had.

The Barbara Hamilton Memorial Award was inaugurated in 1996 and is given to a Canadian artist who demonstrates excellence in the performing arts and is dedicated to advocating and being an ambassador for the arts in Canada. The Barbara Hamilton Memorial Award is presented every two years and is sponsored by the City of Toronto. The recipient is awarded with an official scroll from the City and this year the City has increased the cash prize from $1,000 to $ 1,750.
