The Last Five Years, starring Kevin Quill as Jamie (who also directs) and Broadway's Sarah Killough as Cathy, opened this past weekend at the Cape Cod Theatre Company (home of the Harwich Junior Theatre). With book, music and lyrics all written by Brown (The Bridges of Madison County, Parade), The Last Five Years was the winner of the 2002 Drama Desk Award and was also recently made into the film starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan. The musical chronicles the five-year relationship between Cathy, an aspiring actress and Jamie, a promising author, from meeting to breakup and from breakup to meeting in New York City.
There's good news and bad news in the Gloucester Stage production of Jason Robert Brown's SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD. The inspiring song cycle from 1995 shows the composer's promise that has been fulfilled, as evidenced by his three Tony Awards, and there is much to enjoy in both the music and lyrics (when you can hear them). The five-member cast features quality vocalists, but they often lose focus while they are busily moving around the stage in Director Robert Walsh's zeal to substitute action for the nonexistent connective libretto.

Only one dorm at the University of Hartford has a piano in basement. It's a bit of a risky proposition to take on a classic story that is a huge part of most people's childhoods. Do you try to change it up? Do you try to keep it true to the movie or book? How do you capture the wonder that a child would feel seeing it for the first time? I don't know exactly how one does that, but Theatre by the Sea certainly managed it handily with their new production of THE WIZARD OF OZ. Even a story as well-known as The Wizard of Oz seemed fresh and new but still perfectly timeless. Fantastic performances, amazing vocal talents and elaborate sets and special effects take this world of imagination and bring it right to life.
