The Philadelphia Orchestra Kicks Off 2010-11 Cultural Season

Chief Conductor Charles Dutoit and The Philadelphia Orchestra, who are celebrating 30 magnificent years of musical collaboration together in 2010, kick off Philadelphia's cultural season with the Opening Concert and Gala of the Orchestra's 111th season on Thursday, September 23, 2010, at The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.

Mayor Michael Nutter Announces Philly Orchestra's 2010 FREE Neighborhood Concerts

After wowing international audiences as part of its recent Tour of Asia, The Philadelphia Orchestra returned home to reaffirm its commitment to Philadelphia with the announcement of the 2010 Free Neighborhood Concert Series. Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter joined the Orchestra at a special press conference today to unveil the locations of this summer's three free community performances-Upper Darby Performing Arts Center (Friday, June 18, 7:30 PM), the RiverStage at Penn's Landing (Saturday, July 3, 8:00 PM), and Philadelphia's City Hall (Tuesday, September 21, 7:00 PM).

The year was 1913 and headlines like the ones above may well have been splashed across Parisian newspapers covering the premiere of Igor Stravinsky's controversial new ballet, The Rite of Spring. The piece-with its dissonant sounds and shocking themes of human sacrifice-stunned audiences, sending them into frenzied riots. Within a decade this groundbreaking work would be heard in America in its U.S. premiere by The Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski.

The Philadelphia Orchestra Holds Second Annual Food Drive

The Philadelphia Orchestra needs your help feeding our hungry neighbors in the Delaware Valley! As part of the National Orchestras Feeding America Food Drive 2010, the Orchestra will be collecting non-perishable canned goods at the Kimmel Center one hour prior to the Orchestra's concerts on March 4-6, 11-13, and 16. All food donations collected at these performances will be generously matched by the Campbell Soup Company. All food will be donated to Philabundance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting hunger and malnutrition in the Delaware Valley. As a special thank you for participating in the 2010 Food Drive, all patrons who donate food will be entered to win a subscription to the Orchestra's 2010-11 Beyond the Score series.
