Trustus Theatre brings its second Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Sweat by Lynn Nottage, to its stage this season. Sweat, the second most produced play in the United States this season, brings to light the harsh realities of what it's like to survive on minimum wage in one of the poorest cities in the country and the dissolution of the American dream. This play speaks to Columbia's history-once a regional textile manufacturing center with six mills in operation and 3,400 millworkers-and to how easily the American dream can be lost when the country's economy struggles.
In Trustus Theatre's 34th Season, Trustus Artistic Director Chad Henderson is looking beyond the Midlands to create the outstanding programs housed within the theatre's walls. In 2019, Trustus Theatre is collaborating with four professional theatre artists from Charleston, SC: Sharon Graci (Artistic Director of Pure Theatre), Janine McCabe (College of Charleston Department of Theatre Chair), Erin Wilson (Pure Theatre Core Ensemble Member), and Scott Pattinson (Actors' Equity Association Member, Pure Theatre Core Ensemble Member). The theatre is also bringing back past Trustus Company Member Baxter Engle and Trustus Company Emeritus Steve Harley. Engle is a professional designer who now lives in New York City working with Production Glue, a live event company. Harley is a professional actor who is based out of Myrtle Beach and is a Company Member at Atlantic Stage.
HERE (Kristin Marting, Founding Artistic Director, and Kim Whitener, Executive Director) is proud to close their 25th anniversary season with the commissioned world premiere of American Weather, a new work by director and designer Chris Green, a member of the HERE Artist Residency Program since 2016. With a bittersweet verve, American Weather is a visceral work of material performance inspired by daily life in America.
Trustus Theatre is continuing their Season 33 theme, Eyes Open, with their upcoming production of A Bright Room Called Day by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tony Kushner. At the beginning of 1932 in Germany, the political landscape has begun to shift as the Nazis win control of the parliament for the first time. How would the small, seemingly inconsequential, actions that followed change the world of Agnes Eggling and her friends? What came next was more unthinkable than they could have ever imagined. This show will open on Friday, January 19 and will run through Saturday, February 3, 2018. Tickets may be purchased at www.trustus.org, or by calling the Trustus Box Office at 803-254-9732.
