The Sheldon Art Galleries in St. Louis announces a major retrospective exhibition of the work of St. Louis-born artist Al Hirschfeld to open on Friday, September 7, 2012 as part of The Sheldon's 100th anniversary celebration. Accompanying program:?In Conversation: David Leopold and Louise Hirschfeld, Saturday, September 8, 10:30 a.m., admission free. David Leopold, Archivist, Al Hirschfeld Foundation, and curator of the exhibition Al Hirschfeld's Jazz and Broadway Scrapbook will share stories and with Al Hirschfeld's wife and historian Louise Hirschfeld, illuminating the life and career of the illustrious artist. The exhibition is made possible by Mary Strauss and Terry Schnuck.

To mark the centennial of the establishment of the Arms and Armor Department, Bashford Dean and the Creation of the Arms and Armor Department-an exhibition featuring some 25 rare objects and period photographs-will celebrate Dean's multifaceted career, surveying his work as a field zoologist in Japan, a professor of Vertebrate Zoology at Columbia University, and Curator of Fishes at the American Museum of Natural History, and then concentrating on his groundbreaking work as the Metropolitan Museum's first Curator of Arms and Armor. The exhibition will be on view October 2 through September 29, 2012.

Met Museum's Regarding Warhol Exhibition Begins 9/18

For decades, critics have observed that Andy Warhol's influence is dominant in contemporary art, but as of yet no exhibition has explored its full nature or extent. Regarding Warhol: Sixty Artists, Fifty Years at The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the first major exhibition to do so through approximately 45 works by Warhol alongside 100 works by some 60 other artists. This innovative presentation, structured in five thematic sections, juxtaposes prime examples of Warhol's paintings, sculpture, and films with those by other artists who in key ways reinterpret, respond, or react to his groundbreaking work. The exhibition shows the dialogue and conversation between works of art and artists across generations.

Beck Center Receives $20,000 Arts Education Grant

Beck Center for the Arts has been awarded a $20,000 grant from The PNC Foundation's Grow Up Great initiative, a $350 million, multi-year campaign that began in 2004 to help prepare children from birth to age 5 for future academic success. This funding will be used to provide early childhood arts education programming for preschoolers enrolled in the West Side Ecumenical Ministry's Youth and Family Learning Center (WSEM-YFLC) Head Start as well as The Mary W. Butler Day Care Center at Merrick House in Tremont.
