AOP and Phoenix Concerts Present 'AOP25: Celebrating Composers & the Voice' Concert Tonight

AOP (American Opera Projects) and The Phoenix Concerts will co-produce 'AOP25: Celebrating Composers & the Voice,' a concert featuring the work of composers and librettists from AOP's C&V (Composers & the Voice) program, an annual fellowship that trains composers to write for the operatic voice. The concert will take place tonight, October 11 at 8PM at the Church of Saint Matthew and Saint Timothy: 26 West 84th Street, New York City.

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater announces the full company for Charles Randolph-Wright's world premiere drama Love in Afghanistan. Randolph-Wright, a Resident Playwright through Arena Stage's American Voices New Play Institute and director of Motown the Musical currently on Broadway, joins forces with director Lucie Tiberghien (MCC Theater's Don't Go Gentle) to bring to life the tale of two fantastically different people discovering love in the most unlikely of places: war-torn Afghanistan. One, an emerging hip-hop artist, the other, a high-level Afghan interpreter, both fight to navigate the pitfalls of romance, religious differences and political unrest. Love in Afghanistan runs tonight, October 11-November 17, 2013 in the Arlene and Robert Kogod Cradle.

Deep Dish Theater Announces Discussions to Accompany World Premiere Production of A QUEER KISS

The Deep Dish Theater announces a slate of post-show discussions in conjunction with its world premiere production of A Queer Kiss, a play by Joel Drake Johnson, playing October 25-November 16 at University Mall. Each discussion will begin promptly after the performance. The play's running time is approximately 90 minutes, and patrons not attending the performance are welcome to enter the theater afterwards for the discussion. All discussions are free and open to the public.

New inscriptions to the nation's only Nobel Monument were unveiled on September 22 by NYC Parks Commissioner Veronica M. White, Ambassador of Sweden to the U.S. Bjorn Lyrvall, Ambassador of Norway to the U.S. Kare Aas, and Dr. Robert J. Lefkowitz, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry of 2012. Also in attendance was Dr. Peter Agre, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry of 2003; Dr. Robert Wilson, Nobel Laureate in Physics of 1978; Dr. Lee Goldman, Dean of the Columbia University Medical Center; Jean Donahue, principal at the Bronx High School of Science; as well as several members of the New York Academy of Sciences and faculty from New York University and Columbia University. Burning Coal Theatre to Host Climate Change Panel, 9/21

Burning Coal Theatre Company will hold its first "Lobby Lecture" of the 2013/2014 season, a panel discussion on the subject of global climate change, in conjunction with its current production, The Heretic by Richard Bean. The event will take place at 6 pm on Saturday, September 21st, 2013 at Burning Coal Theatre, 224 Polk Street, Raleigh. Tickets are $5 or free to anyone holding a ticket to any performance of The Heretic.

Pianist Kirill Gerstein returns to New York for performances of orchestral and solo piano works spanning both the classical and jazz genres. Mr. Gerstein, who has cemented his reputation as an outstanding interpreter of Rachmaninoff, makes his subscription debut with the New York Philharmonic performing the composer'sRhapsody on a Theme of Paganini conducted by Semyon Bychkov on Thursday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, October 18 at 2:00 p.m., andSaturday, October 19 at 8:00 p.m. Also on the program is Shostakovich's Symphony No. 11.

Now in its 10th year, Goodman Theatre's 2013 New Stages festival features five FREE new plays-two fully staged workshop productions performed in repertory plus three staged readings-in the Owen Theatre, December 7 - 22. All five plays celebrate Latino playwrights: The Upstairs Concierge, a contemporary farce about celebrity and baseball by Pulitzer Prize finalist (for The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity) Kristoffer Diaz; and The Solid Sand Below, an examination of the intoxicating nature of war which Martin Zimmerman developed during his time as a member of the Goodman's Playwrights Unit, and which was selected for the 2013 National Playwrights Conference at The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Connecticut. The three staged readings, which complement the two workshop productions over the December 13 - 15 "Industry Weekend," are TBA.
