Utah Symphony Kicks off 75th Anniversary Season with Two-Week Beethoven Symphony Festival

Music Director Thierry Fischer and the Utah Symphony celebrate the launch of their 75th anniversary season with a two-week, four-concert Beethoven Festival comprising the composer's first eight symphonies. The cycle of four plays, Ward of the Manor, My Mocking Happiness, Life's Little Nothings and Don Juan, will be performed in Russian and live dubbed in to English by a translator who will be present in the auditorium. 19th Annual Long Island AL JOLSON Festival Featuring Singer TONY BABINO Set for Today

When Al Jolson died in October 1950 at the age of 64, the world lost the man who was arguably the first pop superstar of the 20th century and the Broadway musical theater actor and singing sensation who had been acknowledged as 'The World's Greatest Entertainer.' A few months before Jolson died, a passionate Jolson fan named Dolores Kontowicz from Wisconsin founded the 'Al Jolson Society.' Sixty-five years later, the 1,000-plus member 'International Al Jolson Society' is not only still going strong, the organization holds an annual May 'Festival' at various venues around America and the world. In addition, the Society's current President Jan Hernstat has for the past 18 years produced a 'Mini' Jolson Festival in Long Island, which attracts Society members and local residents who want to revel in the memory of The Great Jolson. This year's 19th Annual event will be held on August 15, 9:30-4:00 pm, in Oceanside, New York (see complete info at end of this story).

Kiev's National Academic Theatre of Russian Drama Lesya Ukrainka brings a festival of events celebrating Ukrainian culture to the St. James Theatre from 8 to 19 September 2015, curated by Mikhail Reznikovich, Artistic Director of the National Academic Theatre of Russian Drama Lesya Ukrainka. The festival, comprising four plays, two free film screenings and a photography exhibition, will give British audiences a rare chance to acquaint themselves with some of Ukraine's cultural masterpieces as well as its developing modern arts scene.

San Francisco Girls Chorus Releases Schedule of Upcoming 2015-2016 Season

San Francisco, CA August 7, 2015 – San Francisco Girls Chorus Artistic Director Lisa Bielawa has announced details of the 37-year-old, five-time Grammy Award-winning Chorus' 2015-2016 season, which will feature premieres by leading American composers and performances with a variety of noted guest artists. The four-program season runs October 30, 2015 through June 12, 2016 in San Francisco and the East Bay and features premieres by Aaron Jay Kernis, Gabriel Kahane and Theo Bleckmann and guest artists including New York early music ensemble TENET, soprano Deborah Voigt in a special American Christmas program at Davies Hall, cellist Joshua Roman and composer-pianist Timo Andres, all conducted by Music Director Valérie Sainte-Agathe. The season will be preceded by a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with Venezuela's celebrated Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and others under the baton of sensational conductor and LA Philharmonic Music Director Gustavo Dudamel September 25 at UC Berkeley's Greek Theatre. At the other end of the season will be the Chorus' return to New York's Lincoln Center in performances of music by Kernis, Kahane, Bleckmann and Bielawa. The Contemporary American Theater Festival at Shepherd University has announced its newest quintet of plays to be presented this summer in rotating repertory. Ed Herendeen, the founder and producing director of the Theater Festival, has selected from the sea of scripts, five new plays from five celebrated playwrights: Johnna Adams, Sheila Callaghan, Steven Dietz, Barbara Hammond, and Michael Weller.

Locals have vandalized the conceptual  art exhibition during the 12th Habana Biennial.  According to reports, guard Moraima Cobas, said: 'I heard a man, yesterday, saying that people stole fragments from an art work that represents a massive birthday cake made of layers of polychrome plastic materials only to cut those fragments into smaller pieces to make their own jewellery. The 150 pesos (6 dollars) a month we are paid to keep the place safe does not compensate for all the effort we have had to put into preventing people from pillaging the art. Everybody wants to steal. We need to be so vigilant in our daily lives. It is part of our culture'.

Sponsored by Children's Musical Theater San Jose and Broadway San Jose, a Nederlander Presentation, this yearly regional awards competition recognizes outstanding achievement in high school musical theatre in the greater California region.
